Turning a complex architectural vision into a workable structure starts with remembering engineering fundamentals.

Snehal Kadam, SE, PE, structural engineering studio leader at @hntbcorp, shares a lesson from the design process of the East Atrium of Milwaukee’s Fiserv Forum: follow the load path.

In this video, she walks through how the team traced loads from the AHU level through the horizontal trusses and composite deck—and how that understanding helped inform the structural solution.

🌉 Did you know Chicago is home to more functional movable bridges than any other city on earth? (One of them actually displays a 1930 AISC Most Beautiful Steel Bridge Award plaque! Do you know which one?)

This week, guests of the 2026 Northeast-Midwest Bridge Preservation Partnership Annual Meeting got a front-row seat to these engineering marvels while cruising down the Chicago River for a specialized technical tour of the city’s world-famous movable bridges, including iconic bascule spans like the DuSable, Wells Street, and Madison Street (Lyric Opera) bridges.

Hats off to the team at NCPP Bridge Preservation Partnership for putting together such an awesome event and unforgettable tour! by @aisc

The exposed steel framing of Central Park’s Davis Center does more than define the space below—it supports the landscape above.

The Davis Center at the Harlem Meer uses 62 tons of structural steel to support a publicly accessible landscape above a 40-ft by 150-ft column-free gathering space. Its 12 sloped, crisscrossing plate girders follow the changing geometry of the roof, creating a structure that is as expressive as it is efficient.

Visit go.aisc.org/davis-nyc to learn more about how the team used steel to integrate the Davis Center into the landscape. Then see how fast you can put it together with this week’s online puzzle at aisc.org/puzzles. by @aisc

Maryam Singery walked into AISC’s Innovation Scholar program hoping to understand steel more deeply. What she took away was something broader: a better understanding of the people, resources, and connections that make the structural steel industry work.

The University of Texas at San Antonio (@utsa) architecture professor discussed that experience, along with her work exploring adaptive reuse and teaching students through hands-on challenges like UTSA’s Mini Ice Box Challenge, in the latest episode of Modern Steel Construction’s Field Notes podcast.

Hear Singery discuss what she learned as an Innovation Scholar—and what she’s bringing back to her students—at aisc.org/fieldnotes. Rather read an excerpt? Check it out at go.aisc.org/fn-singery. by @aisc

A 455-ft main span, active rail lines, a busy river, an airport, and a whole lot of roadway geometry made Kansas City, Mo.'s Buck O’Neil Bridge a complicated puzzle of its own.

Steel plate girders helped the project team navigate those constraints, culminating in more than 9,000 tons of structural steel used across 10 bridge units. Steel’s high strength-to-weight ratio allowed the team to achieve long spans with lighter members that could be lifted and erected where crane access was limited.

Learn more about the project at go.aisc.org/oneilbridge, then put a few of the girders together yourself in this week’s digital jigsaw puzzle at aisc.org/puzzles! by @aisc

Yesterday, AISC's Caitlin Sumner and Heather Gathman stopped by Gonzaga University (@gonzagau) to visit Associate Professor and 2024 Innovation Scholar Joshua Schultz, PE, PhD!

There, they caught up on what's new in Schultz's research, visited Gonzaga's new High Bay Lab, and admired the school's Steel Sculpture.

If you love the Steel Sculpture as much as we do, make time to read about the program's 40th anniversary at go.aisc.org/sculpture40! by @aisc
