Here’s a work I created honoring my great-uncle, T.C., my paternal grandmother’s brother. He owned a barbershop on Greenwood Avenue during the years following the Tulsa Massacre, as the community worked tirelessly to rebuild Black Wall Street in the late 1920s and early 1930s.

His story is part of my family’s history—and part of the enduring legacy of resilience, entrepreneurship, and hope that emerged from Greenwood’s determination to rise again.

Ajamu Kojo is a Brooklyn-based figurative painter and filmmaker whose work explores history, memory, and Black cultural identity through narrative portraiture. Working primarily in oil and tempera on fine linen using the centuries-old Mischtechnik, Kojo combines staged photography, cinematic set design, archival research, and storytelling to create richly layered paintings that reimagine the past while envisioning Black futures. by @ajamu

The Art Department is a group of magical wizards that build, design, & create the worlds that we see on screen.

In this episode of We Love To See It! , @ajamu, @aaqil_ka, @juliavivrettegoldman & #WayneNeho teach us what they do, how they do it, and what it took for them to get there. taken in New York City by @ajamu

Meet the historical figure who is the foundational inspiration behind today’s teach-in session, “Seeding Repair & Revolution”, Fannie Lou Hamer.

Fannie Lou Hamer was a force to be reckoned with. A powerful and resonant orator on par with the likes of Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcom X, a fierce advocate of voting rights for Black Americans and women. A leader in the civil rights movement, a steward of land, a community organizer, and a political disruptor.

Fannie Lou Hamer embodied infinite resilience, and her framework for liberation is one that we should all aspire to carry on today.

“Seeding Repair & Revolution” is presented in partnership with @laundromat_proj.

Above all, the relationship between artist and muse is an act of mutual trust. The artist must create an atmosphere where vulnerability is welcomed, authenticity is protected, and truth is free to reveal itself. It is within that sacred exchange that the strongest work is born.

Thank you for allowing me that grace, @sarlejeffries
