Autumn has landed @portobelloderby! Celebrating the harvest, changing seasons and all that colour. The disco ball has also become a permanet fixture on the street....because you never know when the urge to boogie might strike. Life's too short to stand still! A little bit of home on the walls of Royal Derby Hospital

It was a joy to make these paintings for Home, Health & Hope, responding to the exhibition’s title through three walks from my front door. Along the way, I gathered flowers from my journeys and brought them back into different spaces around my home, rearranging them to create each painting.

The project feels especially meaningful to me because when Dad had his stroke, we spent hours walking the corridors of this hospital, looking at the artwork on the walls. Those paintings gave us moments of distraction, inspiration and, most importantly, hope. So it feels pretty special to now have some of my own work hanging here, hopefully doing the same for others.

Keep an eye out for them if you find yourself there! They’re between Maternity and the main corridor.

I arrived with no idea of what I wanted to create. My only intention was to be as present as possible, surrender to the process and move out of my head and into my body.

The result:

Living Stones
An Embodied Response to 1 Peter

This work brought Scripture, body and landscape together in a small installation, revealing a new way of working that I hope to continue exploring.

Inspired by the iconography in the monastry chapel, I prayed on the first night asking where I should begin. The book 1 Peter (in the bible) was the answer.

I read from this book every day and allowed the words to guide my work.

Scripture led me into the landscape, where its images became physical: grass and flowers were gathered, a living stone was carried down the mountain, and charcoal from the fire became a symbol of sin, cleansing and renewal.

A rhythm gradually emerged: reading, prayer, walking, contemplation, gathering, transforming and making.

Every paint and drawing material was made or found within the landscape.

Trying to be an example to the flock.

What emerged felt like a collaboration with my Creator. I learnt to listen better. taken in Peloponesse, Greece. by @ajoy.boyd

Still, Whisper Waits

As the year draws to a close, I wanted to share a deeply personal project I've been working on. This is the latest version of a socially driven narrative I began during my Master's.

I chose to explore eating disorders because my recovery from one is a huge part of my testimony, and a big reason I continue to make art today.

In this story, the forest represents the thoughts that once consumed my mind. 🕷 The spider, Whisper, embodies the eating disorder I lived with for nearly 15 years 🕷. What I thought was a companion was slowly weaving a prison.

This is a reflection on those dark years, but more importantly a reminder that there is 🕊 ALWAYS HOPE 🕊, even when the forest feels endless.

Coming into Christmas, I know this season can be especially hard. It was, without question, the darkest time of year for me. Eating disorders are a very dangerous illness, often completely hidden. They could be compared to addiction, with the cruel difference that the 'substance' is something we need to survive. So please be gentle and kind with people and try not judge what you can't see, because you never know what someone is carrying.

My relationship with my spider nearly killed me. But by the grace of God, I was met in my darkest hour, and reminded of who I truly am.

As Christmas approaches, I want to gently point back to its heart...a child born in a stable, bringing hope into a world that desperately needed light...and still does. My hope has always been in Him.

This little book is not an ending. It's a glimpse. A prayer. And maybe, for someone reading, a small light in the dark. 🤍
