Hemingway, Ernest. “A Farewell to Arms.” Scribner, 2012. This novel was a mystery going in; I had no idea the direction it would take, nor did I care because it was my first Hemingway read. Hemingway breathes the breath of life in his simple landscape descriptions and quick but functional dialogue sequences. Between Catherine and Henry, Henry and Rinaldi, and so forth, there is not an ounce of awkwardness misplaced nor the act of falling and being in love that feels unrealistic–instead, conversations flowed naturally which I appreciated during the book’s semi-melodramatic plot. While I did not like Catherine and Frederic together at first, hence why it took me a prolonged period to finish, by the end of it, their acts for each other were admirable. Even during action, Frederic Henry remained observant and unwavering in his will to be with his lover and escape WWI—how much more can you ask from him? 3.8/5 by @ajxbibliophile
Kang, Han. “The Vegetarian.” Translated by Deborah Smith, Granta Publications, 2007. This book was bought and read on a whim, which rarely happens as someone with a bottomless “to-be-read” list. I was drawn in and influenced by its “Winner of the 2024 Nobel Prize in Literature” on the cover, and my desire to read another Korean-based story after my love for Min Jin Lee’s “Pachinko.” However, I struggled with the pacing in the first half of the novel, as it was slow and very mundane—though this would aid in the shock-factor of the unreal and quick paced second-half, especially in the last couple of sections when everyone’s life goes to shit. Additionally, the complete change in point-of-views threw me off at first; the narrator that is introduced is not relevant in the slightest from the middle-end (“I hate my wife” final boss). Also, read trigger warnings before reading! After a couple weeks of reflection, I confidently can say that I like the protagonist Yeong-Hye and the writer’s unique choice to perceive her only through her family members–which makes the reader itch for more. The story illustrates evil well, but I most appreciated the decision to create the morally conflicted character, In-Hye, in such a short time span. She is who I am fond of and sympathetic for throughout the novel—the one constant/anchor. This book travels in paths least expected, and is at times so horrifically graphic I had to put the book down. Beyond the lines, the story’s purpose could popularly be argued as a feminist piece in the traditional Korean society, however, I found more enjoyment when I began to read it less as a defiance piece and more as a question that asks, “When does life begin and when does it end?” 2.5/5 #bookreviews #hankang #thevegitarian #bookquotes #reader #readmore #poetry #korean #society #patriarchy #mentalhealth #tw #foryourfeed #writer #bookclub by @ajxbibliophile
Aciman, André. “Call Me By Your Name.” Atlantic Books, 2007. This was the first book I bought abroad, and by law, I read the majority of it somewhere in Northern Italy. I have been a major fan of Elio since the early months of its general movie release in 2018. And I imagined the characters’ physical traits and mannerisms, like I often do, as the actors who played them in Guadagnino’s film. However, the novel was somewhat lackluster (not in comparison to the film). I expected a more-in-depth exploration on Elio’s family bond and previous romantic encounters, alongside more emphasis on his physical interactions with Oliver earlier on, not just the fantasized kind. Also, I love a detailed description of the landscape, which was not a priority in this novel (romance over reality). Lastly, I wish the time jump ending was expanded on or just left out completely–yes, I understand there’s a sequel. On another note, the writing was so delicate and raw that its clear tone pained me at times. Elio’s yearning is definitely relatable. He is an honest young man even when it comes to not knowing how exactly he is feeling, which is a refreshing point-of-view and makes the story a beautiful one worthwhile. 3/5 #bookreviews #andreanciman #callmebyyourname #bookquotes #reader #readmore #poetry #italiano #somewhereinnorthernitaly #gay #lgbtqia #lgbt #romance #yearning #foryourfeed #writer #bookclub #timotheéchalamet by @ajxbibliophile
Alderton, Dolly. “Everything I Know About Love: A Memoir.” HarperPerennial, 2018. This was unexpectedly one of my favorite reads, as I am typically skeptical of the nonfictional genre due to its perception of real life that undoubtedly scares me. However, this book was a whirlwind adventure told in a chronological timeline of events, with some in-between chapters about teenage yearning. The reader grows in maturity alongside the author; it is this intentionality that turns the pages into a story–one so meaningful, raw and captivating to learn about in the moment, and not just as a ‘cautionary tale’ or major reflection. There was beauty, sadness in grief and loss, laughable moments, the realistic portrayal of jealousy in both love and friendship, and many more relatable thoughts and actions depicted. The section about Florence made me cry, and the unbreakable bond between Dolly and Farly is every woman’s dream friendship. Her writing is flawless, and I am glad to have read it at this age in time. Cheers again to my twenties! 5/5 #bookreviews #dollyalderton #everythingiknowaboutlove #bookquotes #reader #readmore #poetry #british #london #relateable #lovelife #dating #friendships #foryourfeed #writer #bookclub by @ajxbibliophile
Vuong, Ocean. “On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous: A Novel.” Penguin Press, 2019. This was a quick read. Vuong is captivating with his words, and his epistolary letters read like prose. He often compares two things or more to one another, which feels so devastatingly complicated in a beautiful way. I want to give him a hug and exchange experiences, but most importantly, I want to hear more of his story. 4.2/5 #bookreviews #vuong #oceanvuong #bookquotes #reader #readmore #poetry #vietnameseamaericanauthor #foryourfeed #writer #bookclub #onearthwerebrieflygorgeous by @ajxbibliophile
