After 30 odd years of paddling this river, it’s incredible to see how nature has reshaped the very core of its existence. Huge house size boulders shifted, bedrock exposed and new lines opened, but despite this, once you find yourself in the depths of the gorge, the river feels familiar. The dance was not easy this time, I felt like a rookie on his first steep descent, but this was more out of respect than being unprepared. It will take time and many more descents to gain confidence and share the flow of the water with this river once again. I look forward to the challenge.

Kiting the aftermath of the Breede River Floods, Witsands, South Africa

‘In mid May 2026, the Breede River burst its banks following a massive, record breaking cold front in South Africa’s Western Cape, causing what experts described as the worst regional flood in over 100 years. The result for Witsands, the mouth of the Breede River and home of southern Cape kiting community was quite devastating.

The flood peaked at 11.01m rise and the flow rate at over 2500m³/s at the Swellendam bridge before the metering station was washed away. With the flood waters came 1000’s of tons of debris including boat jetties, whole trees and masses of reeds.

Drone pilot in training, I managed to capture @camdynkellett putting on a display of free kiting at very low tide, allowing him to avoid most of the obstacles we encountered the day before with stormy southerly winds. This is a favourite amongst international kite travellers and work is in progress already to clear the beaches. There is hope for summer season🤘

Listening to the huge boulders rolling along the river bed below my kayak, I was hoping for a slightly more chilled paddle to ease into the Cape winter season but sometimes you just gotta shut out the noise, retrieve the inner belief and rise to the challenge. Over 30 years of paddling this river and it remains one of the most spectacular rivers in the world.

It’s that time again! The Doring River is up and bookings are open for 2026! This 2 day overnight trip is not restricted to weekends, as long as you have a group of 10 or more, we keen to show you the splendours of this incredible river! The trip runs through the heart of the Cederberg with pristine wilderness camping and awesome whitewater.

We also offer a 3day / 2 night trip starting at Doringbos which covers 70km of whitewater. This is open to group bookings of 10 or more only.
