“Borders & Other Myths”, a group exhibition curated by Laura Twagirayezu featuring artists @mansan_artstudio @chigozieobi_ @cortneyherron @ernest.yankee @mai_ye and @mylesigwe is officially OPEN.

The exhibition brings together the practices of six artists whose works proposes that what appears fixed may be temporary, what appears singular may contain multitudes, and what appears to oseparate us may also reveal the depth of our interconnectedness. The border, like the myth, is not necessarily the end of the story; it is an invitation to reconsider who authored it, who inherited it, and what other stories might exist beyond it.

For inquiries or press information, please contact us via email at manager@galleryaffinity.com
The gallery is open from Tuesday - Saturday (11am - 6pm)

Affinity Gallery is pleased to present Borders & Other Myths, curated by Laura Twagirayezu @akadiho_

Bringing together the work of @cortneyherron @chigozieobi_ @mansan_artstudio @mai_ye @mylesigwe and @ernest.yankee

Through painting, sculpture, and photography, Borders & Other Myths demystifies borders as fixed boundaries, while celebrating myth as a form of self-authorship, allowing histories, identities, and narratives to be reclaimed, reimagined, and transformed.

Join us 13th September at 2pm for the official opening

This is Ikinyugunyugu, an art residency and cluster of galleries. A space I am deeply inspired by! A concept that resonates with me.

Last year I set out on a road trip to go explore this magical place!

Thank you so much @ikinyugunyugu and @cedric_mizero for letting me capture your haven💝

Big shoutout to @okt4ve for the visuals and being the most accommodating videographer 💝

Does life imitates art, or art imitates life? You tell me!

“Voodoo Children” was the title of the last listening session. A nod to Jimi Hendrix’s “Voodoo Child,” who was clearly an inspiration on this album, but also a play on legacy, on D’Angelo’s musical children, the artists carrying pieces of him forward.

Fifteen years after the Voodoo album, D’Angelo returned with Black Messiah, dedicated to Black people and Black music at a time of political unrest, inspired by the uprisings in Ferguson.

Some of these songs were actually written 15 years earlier, during the Voodoo sessions. Meaning this album wasn’t just a comeback, it was an excavation and a continuation…

This was also his most rock and funk leaning album, a real departure in mood from the rest of his catalogue.

In his Afropunk performance in 2014, he did the most unexpected thing: a set that was almost entirely covers, with just one of his own songs played. An ode to his musical heroes.

One track we spent time with: “Charade.” Gospel, funk, rock, and more, all pulled together in such a unique way.

Thank you to everyone who joined us across all three sessions. For listening with intention, for the conversations, and for showing up.
And major shoutout to our speakers that evening @tobiomoteso @_strngeluv_

“The Devil’s Pie” was the title of the second listening session, alluding to the track “Devil’s Pie,” where D’Angelo pretty much describes the impact of being in the music and entertainment industry, and the cost of capitalism on art.

The making of his second album, “Voodoo,” was filled with so much: the birth of his firstborn child with Angie Stone, his discovery of Jimi Hendrix and Electric Lady Studios, a trip to Cuba filled with spiritual revelations, ancestral memory, the logistics of recording the entire album on analogue. And so so much more♾️

With @deanvannguyen and @esosa__ighodaro , we also spoke about the impact that the “How Does It Feel” music video had on his self-image, his life, his career and ultimately his wellbeing! What becoming a sensation at that time implied for him, and what a strong support system looks like for artists today…

@brandjunoh pulled out some serious samples, like Kool & the Gang for “Send It On.” This allowed us to talk about the importance of D’Angelo’s skill in referencing Black music with care and intention, which has been quite impactful in music.

For the display, @chico_feitosa_ so graciously lend us his conga drums from Cuba💫💫💫

Still in February…

“Heaven must be like this”was a three part listening session for D’Angelo, a celebration of his musical journey as it relates to his life in general. 🤍

This was my way of paying homage to his artistry in the most comprehensive way possible (with a lot of limitations).

In chronological order, I wanted us to observe together the evolution of his sound as he evolved as a person. Music is a living thing, and seeing how it grows, transforms, and how people then manipulate it is absolutely intriguing to me…

I was super inspired by Souls Interlude, an exhibition that Lukhanyo Mdingi did on Jazz in SA last year. The visual and audio installation he created really had me dreaming📍 Oh how I wish I had seen it in person!

It was thanks to so many great people that I got to bring my vision to life! Thank you so so much to @brandjunoh @lulitluis @wazzzyyyy @wellspokentoken @stankuuuuusmellymuch et al.💝

To the speakers @ashleychadamoyo @keep_kaylinit and @osazeejbass with the live demo, you all added so many interesting layers to our conversation.💝

The first session was titled “Ushering Soul” as Brown Sugar was the album that ushered the term neo-soul. We dove into D’Angelo’s church and gospel background, his music break as a producer, J-Dilla, his R&B inspirations and so much more…

February packed a lot!

We had the pleasure of screening My father’s shadow at @lighthousecinema along with @maona.art + @davidkillly + @umuti__ma ✨✨✨

We were graced by the film’s very own director and writer @akinoladaviesjr @kingxdavies ✨✨✨

The room was full, the energy was infectious and the art was felt in all of its vastness✨✨✨

Thank you all for showing up and filling up the cinema in a way that Dublin had never seen before - the lighthouse premier was #1 in the entire UK and Irish box office of the film’s release ✨✨✨

Truly what dreams are made of❤️‍🔥
