What happens when music, art and conversation meet? ✨

In this edition of THE DM EXCHANGE, curator and DJ Laura Twagirayezu @akadiho_ shares her approach to creating cultural experiences and bringing different art forms into conversation.

We explore the connections between music and visual art, the curator’s intention, and the possibilities of experiencing culture in new ways.

💬 A note on the conversation bubbles: The responses featured in this carousel are illustrative paraphrases of Laura’s ideas from our interview, not her verified verbatim wording.

September, In No Particular Order

A camera roll full of different days, different moods and evidence that I do, in fact, leave the house outside of running errands. 😂 September had its moments, and I’m glad I got to enjoy them. October, is already looking good.

Laura Twagirayezu shares her thoughts on being Rwandan, remote curation, Africa’s post-colonial realities, and curating Borders and Other Myths at Affinity Gallery.

“I’m very fascinated by how people, how individuals, perceive the world around them! It’s a very internal dimension, as you’ve put it, and this is a personal and intimate part of people that I want to speak to. This curatorial note for me is an invitation to think a little bit more and a little deeper about one’s internal world, one’s personal beliefs, collective beliefs and everything in between – hence the ‘Myths’ in the title of the exhibition.”

“Borders & Other Myths”, a group exhibition curated by Laura Twagirayezu featuring artists @mansan_artstudio @chigozieobi_ @cortneyherron @ernest.yankee @mai_ye and @mylesigwe is officially OPEN.

The exhibition brings together the practices of six artists whose works proposes that what appears fixed may be temporary, what appears singular may contain multitudes, and what appears to oseparate us may also reveal the depth of our interconnectedness. The border, like the myth, is not necessarily the end of the story; it is an invitation to reconsider who authored it, who inherited it, and what other stories might exist beyond it.

For inquiries or press information, please contact us via email at manager@galleryaffinity.com
The gallery is open from Tuesday - Saturday (11am - 6pm)

Dilly dally activities you could do this weekend. Hop into @galleryaffinity and see beautiful art curated by @umuti__ma @akadiho_ . I particularly enjoyed the photography by @ernest.yankee and even got to see his muse IRL. @chigozieobi_ had that fun and free vibe to her works, and I loved it! @cortneyherron ‘s work was captivating! So stunning. Go see for yourself 🫶🏽

👇 Comment GATHERING and we’ll send you the ticket link.

Collision doesn’t have to mean destruction.

It can mean friction. Exchange. Something unexpected taking shape.

Because when different cultures, perspectives and ideas collide, something new can emerge.

On 24 October, we’re putting that possibility into one room.

Come for what you know. Collide with what you don’t.
