A K Dolven will be part of the upcoming 16th Gwangju Biennale titled ‘You Must Change Your Life’, opening this week in the city of Gwangju in South Korea.

Founded in 1995, it is considered to be one of the first major international art biennale in Asia, associated with the city’s pivotal democratisation movement in 1980.

The artistic director for this edition is Ho Tzu Nyen alongside curators Che Kyongfa, Park Gahee, and Brian Kuan Wood.

The duration of the biennale is 05.09 – 15.11.2026.

“Inspired by the final line of Rainer Maria Rilke’s poem Archaic Torso of Apollo, the 16th Gwangju Biennale explores how new capacities and forms of life emerge through artistic practice.
…
A central proposition of this Biennale is that change is sustained through practice. But in order to be generative, any practice must be sustainable enough to repeat across multiple scales of life. Repetition is what shapes how we perceive, how we relate, and how we live. As such living models of persistence and experimentation, artistic practices appear here as cumulative techniques through which individuals and communities embody their experiences of transformation.”

CAS *Consultancy is working with internationally acclaimed Norwegian artist A K Dolven (@akdolven) to develop and deliver a live, collaborative performance with musician Stian Westerhus and dancer Tale Dolven for the University of Bristol. The performance will take place in Bristol on Saturday 10 October 2026!

Event and booking details to follow.

As part of celebrations marking the 150th anniversary of University College Bristol, Dolven’s performance will feature students and staff as well as members of the wider community, and will respond to the University’s Cultural Collections, networks and spaces. In the lead-up to the event, she is engaging with the University’s Changemakers exhibition and working directly with the participants who will form part of the performance.

Dolven’s practice involves a variety of media: painting, photography, performance, installation, film and sound. Interpersonal relations and interactions are central to her practice, and many of her performance-based works involve collaborations with other people. Recurring themes in her production are the representation of natural forces and their resonance with human sensibilities.

This Sunday

We welcome you to an artist talk with Niklas Zaborowski and AK Dolven.

The two artists will explore storytelling as a way of processing experience, memory and perspective. Moving between photography, video, sculpture and metal, the conversation will consider how different media can carry, transform and distort fragments of lived experience.

Taking Zaborowski’s debut exhibition Jeg vil ikke lenger ta på himmelen as a point of departure, Dolven will reflect on his approach to process, materiality and transformation, and on the ways in which experience can leave traces in both the body and the work.

Despite being at different stages of their careers, their practices meet in an interest in the image as something more than representation, a field where memory, material and perception can be continuously rewritten.

Following the conversation, there will be an opportunity to meet the artists and continue the conversation further.
