This garment began on Christmas morning when I saw the amount of wrapping paper me and my family had consumed in order to wrap our presents. I realized that the wrapping paper’s only purpose was to hide the contents of the present and then be thrown away after the present was opened. In my mind this was incredibly wasteful and for the next couple of days I thought of ways I could reuse the wrapping paper in a unique fashion.

I always wanted to make some sort of a puffer jacket, so I eventually settled on the idea of shredding the paper up and using that to fill the jacket instead of the typical puffer synthetic filling. I decided to incorporate some fur because I’d never worked with it before and I thought it would pair well with the garment. I figured if I was going to go all out and create a jacket as bold as the image I imagined, I might as well make pants to go with it.

I started sketching some ideas of what I wanted the garment to look like because I knew it wasn’t going to be as simple as most of the other clothing pieces I’ve made in the past. My original sketch design included a hood but I decided to leave the jacket without one to accentuate the fur collar. The process of connecting the transparent fabric with the cotton base was relatively simple but when I started filling each segment with my shredded paper filling, my studio got very messy.

After weeks of trial and error, clogged vacuums, and broken mannequins, I got to a point where I was ready to attach the final zipper to complete my garment. I felt relieved yet thankful as I trimmed the final excess string off of the jacket and hung it up on my repaired mannequin. If there’s anything I learnt from this project, it’s that there’s a million ways of converting something that most people would throw away back into something with value and meaning.
