Feasibility study for Hunsfos Fabrikken, a former paper mill in Vennesla, southern Norway. The study covers hotel, office and commercial space inside the existing buildings.

Much of the floor area stands empty today. Our task was to map what is available and give the site a clear and readable structure. We 3D-scanned the existing buildings to establish exactly how much floor area is available and how the many levels between the buildings meet, which also made the history of the place easy to read.

The proposal is one continuous route through the whole complex, from one end of the factory and out to the river. Shops and food where people reach them, offices above, a hotel on top.

Full project on our website, link in bio.

Bulbous rush (Juncus bulbosus), known in Norway as krypsiv, is an ordinary aquatic plant until conditions favour it. Then it forms dense stands that grow from the riverbed all the way to the surface, where they spread out as thick mats. In regulated rivers in particular, this makes swimming, fishing and boating difficult, and it can block the water intakes of hydropower plants.

The plants are cut, milled or frozen into the ice and flushed out. That restores the use of a stretch of river for a while, but the underlying causes are complex and still not fully understood, and the biomass that comes out of the water has few uses today.

Together with @flumenlabs_ we have spent this summer asking what it could become: material, object, surface?

We have tried krypsiv in different mixes, proportions and methods of binding, to see what it does.

In our projects we work with what is already present on a site. Could something that is a problem in the watercourse today become part of a solution somewhere else?

More to come as we learn.

The old CB Brewery sits 400 metres from Markens, Kristiansand's main pedestrian street. A five minute walk.
Christianssands Bryggeri has stood along Setesdalsveien since the mid-1800s. The brick volumes, the industrial chimney and the weight of the building in the streetscape are part of how Kristiansand reads itself. A familiar sight along one of the main approaches to the city, even if few think of it as part of the centre.
The distance tells another story. CB sits closer to the centre than many streets we already count as central.
Our concept opens CB towards the city through two moves. A timber addition that meets the brick on its own terms, with a warmth and human scale that lets the historic building remain the historic building. And an activated facade along Setesdalsveien, with retail and public functions at street level and in the basement, offices on the upper floors, and outdoor spaces that give people a reason to stop.
A historic industrial building this close to the city centre has every reason to be a place people seek out.

Norsk:

Konseptet vårt åpner CB mot byen gjennom to grep.

Les mer via lenken i bio

Ta gjerne kontakt dersom du ønsker at vi ser nærmere på ditt prosjekt.

Work in progress — Bygland

A generational home, extended. The main facade of the existing timber house is left untouched — preserving the familiar face of a building that has defined this plot for generations. The addition grows from behind: low, horizontal, and grounded. Solid wood cladding, a flat roof plane, and full-height glazing define the new wing.
A separate entrance to the upper floor allows the building to serve two households while maintaining a coherent architectural whole.
The site is raw. The work continues.

Egen inngang til andre etasje gir bygget to selvstendige enheter under ett arkitektonisk hele.
Tomten er rå. Arbeidet pågår.

Kviåsen (Work in progress)
A single-family dwelling designed in close dialogue with the coastal landscape of Lillesand in southern Norway. The project is shaped by the site’s topography, vegetation, and views, with a fragmented volume composition that follows the natural terrain.

Designed in collaboration with Knut Haarklau.

The illustrations are AI-generated and have been developed as a tool to communicate the project’s concept and spatial qualities in its early stages.
