We're giving back what we consume. It's time to stop talking and start planting.
We are implementing a strategy of planting new trees equal to the amount of timber we use in each of our building projects. In this way we can come closer to our goal of zero carbon emissions from our buildings.
Buildings and the building construction sectors combined are responsible for 36% of global final energy consumption and nearly 40% of total direct and indirect global CO2 emissions. That includes building operations (28%) and embodied carbon of building materials (11%). Planting trees is a natural reaction to the environmental problems we’ve all created. Instead of sitting still, waiting for new technology to be invented, we can start by planting trees.
The reason for this is that trees remove CO2 from the air as they grow. The tree stores CO2, and when the wood is broken down by for example burning or rotting, the same amount of CO2 is released again to be absorbed by other trees.
When building with timber, the CO2 captured by the tree during growth is trapped in the building material. 1 m3 of timber stores approx. 0,8 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂)
By building solid and long-lasting buildings in timber materials, we can store carbon in our buildings, and in the future our cities can be carbon storage units instead of carbon emitters.
The basic prerequisite for the CO2 neutrality of the wood is that the trees are produced sustainably.
Therefore we have have entered into a collaboration with the organizations Plant For The Planet and The Trillion Tree Campaign, where we will plant new trees according to the timber footprint of each of our building projects.
We invite all our friends, colleagues and partners within the building industry to join us. "It's the little things citizens do. That's what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees." – Wangari Maathai - Nobel Peace Prize (2004)
