Akwasak Full Arm

Thank you for trusting me with your skin, your stories, and a piece of your identity.
Day after day, I find myself increasingly grateful for everyone who chooses to be part of this journey.

I never imagined that the little shy Caribbean boy I once was would one day find a way to express his love for these islands through one of his greatest passions: tattooing.

Akwasak is more than a tattoo style. It’s an ongoing exploration of our Caribbean heritage, a way of reconnecting with our history and giving new life to patterns that deserve to be remembered.

One arm at a time, one story at a time.

We’re not just creating tattoos. We’re creating history. by @akwasak

Akwasak is the way to go if you’re looking for something traditional, deeply rooted in Caribbean identity.

Because the Caribbean has never had just one face. We can be African, Asian, European, Indigenous, or a combination of all these identities at once.

I understand how challenging it can be to find ways to honour all these different cultural influences without appropriating or misrepresenting them.

But I think we sometimes forget something fundamental about the Caribbean: what has allowed us to endure, evolve and thrive for centuries is precisely our ability to coexist, exchange and blend.

Look at our food, our music, our languages, our art forms. They all tell stories of different worlds meeting, influencing one another and creating something entirely new.

Akwasak is born from that very idea. Not from claiming one identity over another, but from embracing the complexity of what it means to be Caribbean. by @akwasak

Above we have a Caribbean tribal tattoo style called AKWASAK. This tribal tattoo style created by @justpigment is an Antillean tattoo style developed from visual traces left by the pre-Columbian people of the Caribbean.

The artist developed this tattoo style after years of studying island tattoo traditions around the world and Caribbean archaeological remains.

The tattoo is composed of repetitive patterns, unisex compositions, and movements inspired by the archipelago.

As the artist states “Creating without memory is decorating. To create with memory is to pass on.” by @akwasak

Comment “AKWASAK” if you want to learn more about this new Caribbean tattoo movement.

Akwasak is a contemporary tattoo style I created inspired by pre-Columbian Caribbean history, ancestral migrations, and ceramic patterns from the Saladoid era that spread through the Antilles long before colonization.

It was born from one question:
what would a tattoo style rooted in Caribbean identity look like if we looked beyond colonization and reconnected with our earliest visual histories?

I’ll send you a DM with a link to the full article on my website where I break down:

the creation of Akwasak
the meaning behind the patterns
the history that inspired it
and why reclaiming our narratives matters.

Let’s share this family. We don’t need to be old and gone to make history.

We control our own narrative.
Let’s rewrite.
Let’s reclaim. by @akwasak

AKWASAK.
