🎭 THE HALAL BROTHERS

I'm excited to share that my play, The Halal Brothers, will have a workshop reading at Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken, New Jersey!

Set in Harlem in 1965, on the day of Malcolm X's assassination, The Halal Brothers tells the story of two Bengali immigrant brothers who own a halal store. Against the backdrop of a changing America, the play explores race, identity, immigration, family, and forbidden love.

Featuring an incredible, diverse cast of actors bringing together the Bangladeshi immigrant experience, African American life in Harlem, and Puerto Rican communities, this is a story about the complicated relationships that connect us.

I took the b train to the Hollywood and Vine train station where they have statues of film cameras. My camera man Dan the Man Delorenzo (we worked together on our old TV show Uncle Mortys Dub Shack) and I were shooting in Hollywood and passed by strip clubs named after star wars. It was good day! taken in Hollywood - Los Angeles by @aladdin.ullah

I’m honored to be the keynote speaker this Friday, September 18, at the Boys’ Club of New York’s 150th Anniversary Right of Childhood Conference.

The Boys’ Club gave me a place to belong when I was a kid—and helped me discover who I could become.

Looking forward to coming home. by @aladdin.ullah

On a rainy day in Los Angeles, I’m sitting at The Commissary, the coffee shop around the corner, working on a personal statement for my PhD application to USC and revising my play for upcoming workshops in Jersey and DC.

I took a ten-minute break for more coffee. Coffee is like the chronic when I write—coffee in the daytime, Tofutti Cuties at night.

Writing a personal statement is strange. There’s something awkward about being asked to explain who you are and how you got here. My life is cuckoo—from street kid, to bat catcher, to aspiring Knicks guard, to aimless student who barely graduated high school, to stand-up comedian, playwright and filmmaker.

I’m middle-aged now, and looking back, so many people I loved are no longer here.

Last night I saw Tony, the Anthony Bourdain film. Dominic Sessa was amazing as a young Bourdain—young, dumb, in love, lost and still searching. There’s a moment when he’s dealing with unrequited love and you can feel he has no idea where his life is going.

Of course, we know what he doesn’t know yet.

That stayed with me.

Maybe we’re all searching. We move so fast trying to get somewhere that we forget the journey and don’t stop to celebrate the small victories or remember the people who were there along the way.

Living in LA can be isolating and lonely. Sitting in coffee shops writing by myself, I’ve been thinking about the people I’ve lost. And today I started thinking about my dog Pebbles.

I miss that unconditional love.

Whenever a dog walks into the coffee shop, somehow it seems to find me, as if they know I’m just some writer sitting in solitude who has lost a lot of people he loved.

Dogs know what time it is.

Pebbles was a tiny gem. I miss her. I miss the people who are gone. Maybe looking back reminds me that none of us knows where we’re going while we’re living it.

We’re all searching, loving people along the way, losing some of them, and hopefully remembering to stop once in a while and appreciate the journey. taken in Commissary Coffee+Bakery by @aladdin.ullah
