The Lost Bengali History of Harlem Before the history books told their story, Bengali immigrants were building lives in Harlem, sharing homes, families, and businesses with Black and Puerto Rican New Yorkers. The BCNY Conference: The Right to Childhood was an incredible success! Thank you to the youth workers, educators, researchers, and policymakers who joined us to explore how we can protect the freedom to learn, grow, and just be a child. BCNY Alumnus Alaudin Ullah set an inspiring tone for the entire day with his opening keynote speech, bringing attention to the urgency of the moment and passionately advocating for spaces where every child has a space where they truly feel seen, accepted, and belong. Building on that foundation, panelist and BCNY alumnus Tareake Dorill Ramos powerfully noted the necessity of adult development—challenging how the adults, systems, and structures surrounding our young people must shift to protect their joy, honor their curiosity, and cultivate these vital spaces of safety. We broke down these challenges across three dynamic panel sessions: Panel 1: Defying Stereotypes Through Youth Work | Bianca J. Baldridge, PhD, EdD • Tareake Dorill Ramos • Joseph Derrick Nelson, PhD (Moderator: Jessica Mingus, MSW) Panel 2: Centering Youth Voices | Ashanti Branch • Niobe Way, PhD • Jasiyah Gilbert (Moderator: Melissa DiPento, Journalist) Panel 3: Play: What Our Systems Forget | Chris Reigeluth, PhD • Adriana Villavicencio, PhD • Fabienne Doucet, PhD • Hope Acevedo, MSW (Moderator: Stephen Tosh, BCNY CEO & Executive Director) The collective takeaway was clear: a true childhood requires joy, a safe space to learn, the freedom to explore, and authentic belonging where young people can take off their "masks" and just be themselves. As BCNY celebrates 150 years of community impact, this day reminded us that securing these rights is our collective responsibility. The conference is over, but the work continues! Let’s build this movement together. Think back to your favorite childhood memory. Who made it possible? For too many kids today, those memories are getting harder to come by, as systems built around performance and productivity leave less and less room to simply play. Ahead of The Right to Childhood conference on September 18, we’re thrilled to share a preview of our keynote with @aladdin.ullah — actor, director, author, and BCNY alumnus. Alaudin’s story is a powerful reminder that every child deserves a safe place to play, grow, discover, and simply be a kid.

Because joy isn’t a luxury—it’s essential to childhood. 💛 We can’t wait to hear him bring this perspective to the stage and help us explore why protecting every child’s right to joy, safety, and belonging matters so deeply. Registration is full. Join the waitlist at our link in bio.

For me, directing a solo play is one of the most intimate and rewarding experiences in the theatre. You’re not just collaborating with an artist you admire. You’re entrusted with the events in their lives that shaped who they are as a person and as an artist. Their character. Their struggles. Their triumphs. Their fire. The solo play is also the purest form of political theatre: an artist standing in front of an audience, reliving, sharing and testifying about their life and journey. There is nothing between the audience and the artist’s truth. Their work is a living document, a living history of this country. Over the years, I’ve had the profound privilege of collaborating and being invited into the worlds of extraordinary artists and human beings: Brian Quijada, Kristina Wong, Luis Alfaro, Mashuq Mushtaq Deen, Scott Bradley, Alec Mapa, Alaudin Ullah, Dael Orlandersmith, and so many others. Coming from communities too often denied visibility and voice, these artists share their stories with breathtaking courage. They make me want to be a better person and a better artist. They are, simply, my heroes. One such hero is Larissa FastHorse. As a colleague, I have always been struck by her strength, ferocity, passion, and joy. But it was her deeply personal work, FANCY DANCER, that made me understand how Larissa came to be. Every time I sit with an audience and experience her powerful work and performance, we leave changed, inspired by her journey of strength, resilience, and community. Friends in Minneapolis and St. Paul, please come experience FANCY DANCER at History Theatre. Growing up half Lakota and half white, Lara lives as an outsider until she discovers the story of Osage prima ballerina Maria Tallchief and is compelled to become a dancer. But with a body that doesn’t quite conform, can she make her dream come true? FANCY DANCER is a vibrant, multigenerational journey about finding your community, honoring your roots, and stepping into your power. Performances start September 10 through October 4.
