“From ‘Serving and Protecting’ to ‘Healing and Connecting,’ 𓆃

I spent time with over 2,000 incarcerated individuals over the past two months, and I’m astonished to see how much a perspective can shift in even the most difficult places.

Growing up in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, at the age of 14, I found myself arrested and spent time in jail. It was during this period that I made a conscious decision to change my path. At 16, I joined the Police Academy, becoming the youngest police officer in the country.

Throughout my eight years of experience within the police force, I became quickly aware that real and lasting change in our communities requires addressing the systemic flaws that contribute to trauma and disconnection. Inequality, systemic racism, police brutality, and a broken justice system were daily realities for me from an early age. I loved my job, but the traumas I experienced, over time profoundly impacted my mental state, leaving me feeling demotivated, numb, and suffering from PTSD.

Today marks exactly 24 years since I experienced a traumatic event that led me to lay down my badge and my gun.

During my time in the police career, I observed that some of the most traumatized individuals end up committing crimes, leading them to prison. Unfortunately, most prisons do not prioritize healing trauma, which only further traumatizes these individuals and makes it difficult for them to reintegrate into society.

This cycle of trauma repeats itself and contributes to an unsafe and disconnected society. Breaking this cycle is crucial to creating a safer and more connected world.

In this chaotic and complex moment in our collective experience, offering my time in service to alchemize heavy energies in prisons feels like the right path for me, given my background and experiences.

This work is only possible with the support of my community.

If you feel inspired, please visit the link in my bio to learn more about the project and donate. Your contribution would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.”

Sharing with 350 imprisoned men on the power of forgiveness, processing emotions and letting go of judgement wasn’t something I envisioned doing while serving my community as a police officer 20 years ago. Life took me on a journey far beyond as I grew from “Serving and Protecting” to “Healing and Connecting” I realized that every moment in life simply prepares us for our future expressions. #lawenforcement #change #purpose #ilisten #prison #wearemanenough #change #servingandprotecting #police #coaching #healing by @alainlagger

3 maanden.
Een vaste groep. (online)
Maximaal 8 mannen.

My visit to the Netherlands has started beautifully, with a special morning at a police station in Amsterdam, alongside a group of law-enforcement specialists focused on youth.

It was the first time since I left the police in 2000 that I shared my story with a group of Dutch officers.

My experiences around restoring connection within international police organizations and the communities they serve, my work in Colombian prisons, and youth projects and police in North and South America. The conversation felt timely and was deeply inspiring and educational.

The gap between police and community feels larger than ever before right now, so it feels like the right moment to bring my findings and work back to the place where it all began for me, after all these years.

What struck me is that so much of what these officers experience today around youth and culture are things I already felt 25 years ago, when I was still wearing my badge. The only difference is that we did not yet have the words, the support of the internal culture, nor the space to go deeper into those conversations.

I feel that things have genuinely shifted in a more positive direction, and at the same time I feel the journey is far from over. That is precisely what makes it worth it for me to bring my work back into these spaces.

Connection is where it all begins.

Special thanks to my former classmates @bodierob and Silvia for supporting and organizing this beautiful moment reconnection. It feels meaningful to somehow still feel at home and so welcomed into the organization after all these years.

I look forward to bringing more of this work into these spaces.

As I was going through some videos for my recent website redesign, I found this video. It reminded me of something important. I’ve stood and talked in front of thousands of adults, from the roughest prisons to the most polished boardrooms. But when I saw this video it reminded me of how I felt right before stepping into a school hall with 200 children between the ages of 6 and 11. I’ve never felt nervous to speak anywhere in the way I did that day. I was wondering whether these kids were going to understand what I was about to share with them, and I was feeling the full weight of the responsibility to speak to children at this formative age about a subject that I have witnessed transform so many people.
In the end, if I were to label any experience as my favorite, it would be this one. Those 200 kids were deeply connected to the material. And what came in the mail a week later brought me to tears. A book filled with testimonials, drawings and thank you notes, one from each of them. These pages have throughout the years been an anchor to me. No testimonial, recognition, or award has ever moved me as deeply.

This summer I will dedicate time to teaching children again, during summer activities in the Netherlands. If you have a group and want to explore what this could look like, or if you are simply curious about the work, check out my new website. Link in my bio.

I recently visited Suriname, the land where many of my ancestors were born. Most were brought here by force during Dutch colonization, and this history always made me hesitant to visit. But this trip changed everything.

I came to celebrate Suriname’s 50th year of independence from the Dutch and was invited to join a panel at the Anton de Kom University after a powerful lecture by @larosemarcel on the crossroads Suriname now faces.

New oil fields bring huge potential but also the danger of repeating old patterns where wealth left the country or was never used to build a strong foundation for its people.

Suriname is one of the most culturally diverse places I have ever seen. Descendants of Africans, Indians, Indonesians, Chinese, Maroons, Creoles, and Indigenous peoples all shape this nation. Synagogues, mosques, temples, and churches stand side by side. It is beautiful, and still there are tangible layers of division between communities, between those who stayed and those who left at the moment of independence , and within the diaspora that I am part of.

Something deep awakened in me on this trip. I felt the weight and presence of my ancestors and a strong desire to build a relationship with this country and its beautiful people. This visit opened something in me and I look forward to returning soon! 🇸🇷

Today I had the honor to facilitate a workshop for the entire team @fundacionaccioninterna

For the past ten years, this organization has supported me in bringing my workshops into prisons throughout Colombia.

We are now deepening our collaboration as I begin testing the material from the book I wrote, both with people who are currently incarcerated and those who have recently been released.

Even though the book is meant for humans from all walks of life, sharing and testing this work in spaces where healing and change are most needed feels like the right place to begin.

Thank you @johana_bahamon_ for believing in this work since day one. I look forward to this new chapter in our collaboration and shared mission to contribute to the healing and transformation the world needs more than ever right now. 𓆃

I’ve been traveling through Colombia, visiting land-based and social projects that are creating real change.
Regenerating ecosystems, supporting local communities, and weaving education with lived experience.
One place that moved me deeply is the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta.
The Kogi, Arhuaco, Wiwa, and Kankuamo peoples speak of this land as the heart of the world.
They remind us that what happens here affects the entire planet.
To be here is to feel that truth in my entire being. As I move through these lands and witness the complexity of this work, I’m also seeing more clearly where life is calling me.
These projects ask people to show up fully. And often, the deepest healing happens in the relationships, within teams, between founders, and in the quiet spaces within ourselves.
I feel honored to offer what I can.
To hold space. Share what I learned from my years @brave_earth_ To help bring clarity and alignment where it’s needed most.
Because healing communities begins with how we relate to one another.
I’m grateful for all my new friends, and all the codes that were exchanged. To the Indigenous communities who share their wisdom with such generosity in service to guide the changes we need to restore balance in our eco-systems. Gracias Juana @__n__i__d__o__ for your art, your vision, heart, and generousity, @lauradelmar.coach @generacionenraizada for being the best warrior little sister I could wish for, and to my brother @priority_shift , for guiding me on this journey and welcoming me into his community with such grace.
More soon. For now, I’m listening. 𓆃 taken in Colombia by @alainlagger

The jungle I call home has been one of my greatest teachers. Not once have I returned from her embrace without learning something valuable.
She holds the codes—everything we need to know about life, healing, and regeneration is right there.

Our dominant culture often pulls us away from nature, from our source, our home, disconnecting us from ourselves and our surroundings. Perhaps the answer isn’t in doing more, but in remembering where we came from.
Wherever you are, maybe take a moment to be with nature—a park, a forest, the desert, even the plant inside your home. She just might guide you back to something deeper. 𓆃
