POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Jones Falls 2076 began with life along our buried and unburied streams here in Baltimore. Walks that Lee Davis and I took along different stretches of this hidden urban enigma; a speculative and fateful conversation that Bruce Willen and I had one day on the Stony Run just before it disappears underground; ongoing efforts by our local watershed advocates to bring attention to our neglected waterways; the vision of our creative community in bringing these waters into imaginative focus. How thrilling to see it all manifest now in an exhibition featured on the billboard next to Penn Station.

Thanks to everyone who came out to our exhibition opening last night at the Peale: our amazing artists, designers, and writers; the wonderful team at the Peale led by Andie Townsend; our project team anchored by Nic Amsel and held in shape by our tireless coordinator Julianne Chan; so many civic, artistic, and environmental voices here in Baltimore; and so many of those who gathered over these last months of the Jones Falls 2076 project, in our workshops and dreamwalks and other public events. We are so grateful for this community, the support of the Chesapeake Bay Trust, the Ecological Design Collective, and our other donors and sponsors.

So gratifying to see everyone come together in a space framed by such compelling visions of what our city could yet become. We had the third floor of the museum to ourselves, and it was packed last night. We even maxed out the fire code-related RSVP cap! It felt like a testament to the deep desire to reclaim the futures and narratives before us, the radical promise embodied in these works. I’m deeply grateful to Bruce for leading the exhibition curation with such creative genius, and to Lee for the deep well of his humanity.

I’m proud of what has grown out of this collective journey, and thankful for everyone I’ve been able to share it with over these months and years, beginning with my family and our life along the Stony Run for the last twenty years (credit to Uma Pandian of RPEMS for most of these photos). I’ve learned so much from you all. Folks, if you’re in Baltimore or nearby, come check out our exhibit, open till November 22nd! taken in The Peale by @alainthavan

Join us this Thursday, October 15th from 5-7 pm for the opening reception of our exhibition, Jones Falls 2076! Link in our bio to RSVP!

The Jones Falls 2076 exhibition at The Peale explores alternative futures for Baltimore’s Jones Falls River, as imagined by artists, designers, writers, and community members.

Baltimore’s founding river has been hidden below I-83 for over 50 years, overlooked and mistreated. This waterway made possible the rise of Baltimore as an American industrial powerhouse. And yet it is out of sight and out of mind for many residents of the city and region. As the elevated expressway covering the Jones Falls nears the projected end of its lifespan, more and more Baltimoreans are imagining and asking for a different future for the river.

Jones Falls 2076 poses these questions: What futures do we want for the river at the heart of our city? And how might we get there?

🖼️ On view October 15–November 22 at The Peale
🥂 Opening Reception: October 15th from 5–7pm

Join us for events including panels with civic leaders and planners, artist roundtable discussions, and a community design charett where Baltimore community members will brainstorm and collaborate on design concepts for a restored Jones Falls.

It was an absolute joy to talk with speculative anthropologist Anand Pandian, whose book A Possible Anthropology: Methods for Uneasy Times has been very inspiring for me over the years.

Thanks to Rick at the Curiosity Entangled podcast for inviting us to share our practices and thinking. It was one of those rare occasions where I felt like I had met a kindred spirit; although we spoke and met for the first time, and although we have come to your practices from completely different paths, we have arrived, somehow, on very familiar ground. We talked about imagination and futures, about power and care, about teaching and learning, about unmade worlds and endless possibilities 🧡

Thanks @alainthavan and Rick @curiosityentangled for this expansive conversation. You can find the podcast where you listen to podcasts or there's a link in my bio. by @alainthavan

Join us on August 27th for our second Dreamwalk, where we will explore the Jones Falls trail and discuss the past, present, and future of the local environment and the wildlife that inhabit it. Hosted by Stanley Kemp, PhD, a professor from the University of Baltimore, we will ask ourselves: what can we learn from nature and its history that can inspire our present and future ties to the river?
