“A Sanctuary of Infinite Patience”
curated by Vesa Sahatçiu

Drawing its title from a verse in Etel Adnan's book of poetry "Night," the exhibition "A Sanctuary of Infinite Patience" explores memory not as a component of the past, resting in the confines of what is perceived as linear time, but as an active aspect of the present. Memory and time are immaterial, as Adnan puts it, they merge with us in the present.

This year's edition of Tirana Art Weekend addresses the theme of "Getting Closer." What occurs when we get close to one another? When we exchange, when we merge? In particular, what takes place when this merging happens within the context of a people who have historically struggled to "get close"? A people subjected to geopolitical struggles, and dare I say, deprivations?

"A Sanctuary of Infinite Patience" proposes not merely an exchange between current contemporary artists from Albania and Kosovo, but an unraveling of the complexities that arise once we fully face each other. Once the myths - the stories, and anecdotes inherited from generation to generation, mingle with us in the present.

The Albanian Visual Arts Network is pleased to announce that Vesa Sahatçiu has been selected as curator of Tirana Art Weekend 2026, with her proposal “A Sanctuary of Infinite Patience.”

The decision follows the deliberations of an independent jury composed of Arnold Braho, Blerta Hoçia, and Niovi Zarampouka-Chatzimanou. The jury reviewed a strong and varied field of proposals, and reached its conclusion after close discussion in which several submissions were considered at length. Sahatçiu's concept emerged as the one that consistently held the jury's attention for its highly relevant framing, its strong conceptual core, and an anchoring that creates immediate resonance. For the jury the proposal combines curatorial depth with an open-ended format that leaves room for the final shape of the exhibition to emerge through a situated curatorial process as it becomes deeply connected to the local scene.

Vesa Sahatçiu is a writer, cultural worker, and independent curator. She began her career at the National Gallery of Kosovo, researching modernism in former Yugoslavia with a focus on local histories. In 2014, she curated Petrit Halilaj’s landmark solo exhibition, “Darling, squeeze the button and remove my memory,” the artist’s first large-scale show in Kosovo. She has since played a central role in shaping Prishtina’s cultural landscape, co-authoring the winning bid for Manifesta 14 and later serving as a Cultural Advisor to the Mayor. A board member for Manifesta 14, her recent curatorial projects include Valbona Zherka’s “Journeys,” and Blerta Hashani’s “The Sun on the Blades of Grass” in Tirana. Vesa pursued an MA in Visual Cultures at Goldsmiths, University of London, and a BA in Art History from the University of Auckland.

AVAN extends its sincere thanks to all curators who submitted proposals for this edition. The range and quality of the submissions speak to the vitality connected to the Albanian scene, and we hope to continue building collaborative relationships with the shortlisted open-call participants in parallel projects and processes.

Our congratulations go to Vesa Sahatçiu. We look forward to the unfolding of Tirana Art Weekend 2026! taken in Tirana, Albania by @albanianvisualartsnetwork

Getting Closer is about approach, the promise of almost there, and the unease of what is closing in. It traces the distances that feel fleeting until they are not: one step, one look, one policy, one moment of contact. Proximity can be tenderness or coercion, repair or capture. #TAWE2026 turns closeness into a framework, and a question, asking what changes when distance collapses.

AVAN is inviting curators to submit proposals for an exhibition concept highlighting contemporary artists from Albania and Kosovo.

Send all proposals to contact@avan.al by 31 March 2026.

As we get closer to the end of the year, we can’t help but look back at what was absolutely our highlight for 2025! That’s why we’re excited to share a glimpse into some of our favourite moments from Villa AVAN during this second edition of Tirana Art Weekend. ✨

Whether you were with us from the start, or are discovering it from afar, these highlights capture the energy of an edition shaped by interventions, talks, exchange, and collective presence.

Tirana Art Weekend continues to grow as a meeting point for artists, spaces, and audiences, reflecting the continuing evolution of Albania’s contemporary art scene and the collaborative spirit nurtured by the Albanian Visual Arts Network.

Most importantly, this edition would have not been made possible without the support of our partners, collaborators and beautiful visitors!
