@bodiesbrainsandminds activity continues offline! I’ve been off socials for more than 6 months and it’s been like a breath of fresh air.

As a “proof of life” I am sharing an article I wrote on @substack titled “Why is the public becoming numb?” It talks about the issues we go through in 2026, a health forecast, a public health resolution. ✍🏼 Check the substack link in my bio to go check it out!

While I’ll still be offline and until we meet again, stay safe and in balance with your body, your brain and your mind!

🧠 What if we could prevent or delay nearly half of dementia cases?

Dementia is not simply an inevitable consequence of ageing. Research suggests that up to 45% of dementia cases could potentially be prevented or delayed by addressing 14 modifiable risk factors throughout life.

And prevention doesn’t begin at 70. It begins decades earlier.

🏃‍♂️ Physical activity
🥗 Good nutrition
😴 Quality sleep
🧠 Intellectual stimulation
❤️ Social connections
🩺 Managing blood pressure, cholesterol and other health risks

These are not just lifestyle choices. They influence vascular health, neuroinflammation, cognitive reserve and the biological processes that shape how our brains age.

As a clinical neuroscientist, I believe we need to shift our attention from simply treating disease to understanding how we can reduce the risk of developing it in the first place.

We cannot prevent every case of dementia, but we can do far more to protect brain health across our lifespan.

Prevention is not a guarantee. It is an opportunity. 🧠

☀️ Your brain needs light just as much as it needs sleep.

One of the simplest things you can do for your brain health is to step outside shortly after waking up.

🧠 Here’s why:

Your brain contains a biological clock called the suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), located in the hypothalamus. It regulates your circadian rhythm, influencing when you feel awake, when you become tired and when your body prepares for sleep.

🌤️ Exposure to natural morning light helps synchronise this clock, supporting:

💤 Better sleep timing and regulation
⚡ Improved daytime alertness
🧠 Cognitive performance and concentration
🌙 Healthy melatonin rhythms
❤️ Overall circadian and metabolic health

Aim for at least 10 minutes outdoors in the morning. Cloudy days count too, although you may benefit from longer exposure when daylight is weaker.

We spend so much time looking for complicated solutions to improve our health that we often overlook the biology of simple daily habits.

Better sleep doesn’t just begin at bedtime. It begins with what you do when you wake up.

My biggest reflection from regularly stepping away from social media is how much life happens when you’re no longer constantly watching everyone else’s.

And when I step away, I completely disappear. I delete all the apps. I write a lot. I plan. I work. I work on myself. I read, I exercise, I reconnect with people, and most importantly, I reconnect with my own thoughts.

Every time I do this, I realise how much mental space we unconsciously give away. How easily we confuse being informed with being distracted, being connected with being present, and being visible with actually making progress.

There is something incredibly liberating about doing things without feeling the need to document them. Achieving something without announcing it. Enjoying a moment without photographing it. Working towards something without seeking validation along the way.

I also notice that my creativity improves, my priorities become clearer, and I become much more intentional with my time.

And perhaps my biggest realisation is that you don’t need to be constantly available to the world to build a meaningful life within it.

Social media has its place. It allows us to educate, connect, inspire and share ideas. But it should never become a substitute for actually living.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do for your body, brain and mind is to disconnect from the noise and reconnect with yourself.

Less scrolling. More thinking. More creating. More living. 🧠🌍 by @albertvamanu

What if improving your brain health started with something as simple as what you put on your plate?

We often underestimate how much our diet influences not only our physical health, but also our brain and mental wellbeing. 🧠

Our gut is home to trillions of microorganisms that interact with our immune system, metabolism and nervous system.

🥦 Here’s your challenge for today: Add one extra plant-based food to every meal. Beans, lentils, oats, berries, nuts or vegetables. Keep it simple!

🔬 Why does it matter?

Dietary fibre supports beneficial gut bacteria, which produce short-chain fatty acids involved in regulating inflammation, maintaining gut health and influencing communication along the gut–brain axis.

You don’t need expensive supplements, detox programmes or complicated diets to start improving your health.

Small changes, repeated consistently, can make a meaningful difference.

💙 Your body, brain and mind are connected. Start looking after all three.
