Earlier this summer, WOPHA gathered artists and cultural practitioners at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris (@citedesartsparis) for A Caribbean Reasoning, an informal gathering centered on Caribbean photography.Building on conversations initiated during WOPHA’s research workshop First Was the Abyss at the Brooklyn Museum (@brooklynmuseum), and convened by WOPHA Founder & Director Aldeide Delgado (@aldeide_delgado), the gathering created space to share work, exchange ideas, and reflect on the histories and futures of photography across the Caribbean and its diasporas.The program concluded with the signing of Toward a Manifesto: Caribbean Photography Research Group, marking an important milestone in the development of this growing international network.Thank you to everyone who joined us in Paris and contributed to this important exchange. We are excited to invite you to an engaging presentation on Caribbean women’s photography by 2026 Research Fellow Lauren Baccus, in collaboration with FIU’s Department of Art + Art History (@fiuart).In Conversation: Lauren Baccus and Aldeide Delgado features 2026 WOPHA Research Fellow Lauren Baccus (@bythelb) in dialogue with WOPHA Founder & Director Aldeide Delgado (@aldeide_delgado). Baccus will share her research project, “Intimate Archives and Black Feminist Memory”, which explores Caribbean women’s photography as a practice of intimate archiving and a form of Black feminist memory work. Meet the Instructor: Silvia Lizama Through our Insider Gaze video series, we are pleased to introduce visual artist @sillizama, who will lead our Master Hand-coloring Techniques workshop on Sunday, March 29. Born in Havana, Cuba, Lizama relocated to South Florida in 1960. She earned her BFA from Barry University and her MFA in Photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Over a distinguished 37-year career, she served as Professor of Photography and Chair of the Department of Fine Arts at @barryuniversity, and was named Professor Emerita in 2023. Since 1978, her hand-colored photographs have been exhibited nationally and internationally, gaining recognition in major exhibitions and collections. This four-hour workshop begins with a presentation on the history of hand-coloring in photography, situating the practice within its artistic and historical context while reflecting on Lizama’s sustained engagement with the medium. Participants will then receive a detailed demonstration of materials and techniques, focusing on the use of Marshall’s Photo Oils on silver gelatin fiber prints. WOPHA and Green Space Miami are pleased to present “Finding One’s Ceremony”, a two-person exhibition curated by Aldeide Delgado, Founder and Director of WOPHA.Featuring Miami-based artists of Peruvian descent Diana Larrea and Zonia Zena, the exhibition explores the universal question of who we are, through their ongoing connection to ancestral ceremonial practices in Peru. Although both were raised and educated in Miami, returning to their homeland becomes a kind of renewed migration: an experience of rediscovery shaped by memory, family histories, and cultural inheritance.The exhibition marks the beginning of a year-long partnership that establishes Green Space Miami as WOPHA’s physical home throughout 2026. This collaboration opens new partnerships with the Kimberly Green Latin American and Caribbean Center at Florida International University and extends WOPHA’s ongoing relationship with the Green Family Foundation Caribbean Cultural Institute at Pérez Art Museum Miami (PAMM).
