📸 Join us for the next event of Image Readings: Affective Archives Edition.Throughout the summer, WOPHA’s monthly community gathering for photographers and image-makers is hosted by the artists featured in our exhibition Affective Archives. We are proud to introduce “Exposures”, a new initiative supporting two South Florida-based artists through a culturally immersive residency in vibrant photography ecosystems around the world.Designed to foster artistic growth, professional development, and lasting cross-cultural connections at a pivotal moment in an artist’s career, the program provides strategic access to leading cultural institutions, festivals, and international networks. We are delighted to announce Rose Marie Cromwell (@rorosiemarie) as the inaugural Exposures Artist-in-Residence.Based in Miami, Cromwell has exhibited internationally, including solo presentations at ICA Miami and Pier 24 Photography, with additional exhibitions at the High Museum of Art, Norton Museum of Art, Aperture Foundation, The Carnegie, and the Bemis Center, among others. Thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening reception of Affective Archives 💜Curated by Amanda Morgan (@akm305), the exhibition brings together the work of Miami-based photographers RemiJin Camping (@remijinphotography), Christine Cortes (@christine_cortes), and Alicia Vera (@aliciavera). Earlier this summer, WOPHA gathered artists and cultural practitioners at the Cité internationale des arts in Paris (@citedesartsparis) for A Caribbean Reasoning, an informal gathering centered on Caribbean photography.Building on conversations initiated during WOPHA’s research workshop First Was the Abyss at the Brooklyn Museum (@brooklynmuseum), and convened by WOPHA Founder & Director Aldeide Delgado (@aldeide_delgado), the gathering created space to share work, exchange ideas, and reflect on the histories and futures of photography across the Caribbean and its diasporas.The program concluded with the signing of Toward a Manifesto: Caribbean Photography Research Group, marking an important milestone in the development of this growing international network.Thank you to everyone who joined us in Paris and contributed to this important exchange. Happy Friday, and Mabuhay! RemiJin Camping (@remijinphotography) here, thank you for joining me throughout this week’s WOPHAgrams!When I made this project, my Mother was still alive, and I was fortunate enough to share it with her. She was so happy to see how much she was able to give me, as well as how much I had kept through all the years. Now that she recently passed, these objects hold so much more meaning and hold such a strong connection to her. At the time, the shipments of boxes and suitcases filled with various things didn’t hold the weight that they do now, knowing that those shipments will never come anymore.1. Installation in progressPurses are a lucky item and she would buy them constantly, for all the women in our family. These are only a small portion of the ones she had given me over the years. Purses must always be given with a little money inside, to bring luck and prosperity. I have given away / worn out just as many as seen in the photo. Hello again and Mabuhay! I’m RemiJin Camping (@remijinphotography), and I’m excited to continue the WOPHAgrams takeover for the week.There is a strong tradition in the Philippines of gift giving, specifically called Balikbayan Boxes for Filipinos who work overseas and send items back to the family still in the Philippines. Even if I was in the same country or the same city, my Mother carried on with this tradition, not only with myself, but also with my brother and his family, her granddaughter, and the other members of the family still in the Philippines. It was her love language. Whether she had money or no, whether items were real or fake, she always felt compelled to give gifts to take care of those she loved.1. Seventy-Eight Bracelets Stored2. Not all items are given for luck, many times it’s because it was a good day at the casino.My Mother’s favorite perfume was Chanel No.5 and my Father used to give it to her as a gift frequently. Hello again and Mabuhay! I’m RemiJin Camping (@remijinphotography), back for day three of the WOPHAgrams takeover.When working on this series, I didn’t have a specific intention with the layout. I would raise the tripod as high as I thought I needed it to be, put down something to denote the edge of the frame I could see in the film camera, and then just sit and stare at the items. There were a million thoughts that would run through my head, all thinking about my Mom, her life, my family’s life, and everything else happening in my life. And sometimes, just a stillness of nothing. There was no forethought for the layouts, just the time communing with the items and feeling everything and nothing all at the same time1. She used to wear them more in her youth but her ear piercings have stretched out. I think she continued to buy earrings because it is the one piece of jewelry I like and wear consistently.In 1978 my Father met my Mother in the Philippines and continued to live there through the mid 1980’s when Marshall Law fell. My Father was traveling throughout Asia for work as a general contractor and bought these for my Mother while in Japan. She gave them to me around the time my Father passed away.There were a few casinos where my Mother got comp’ed a room since she had been going to them for years. She kept the room toiletries and got extras from housekeeping, then would bring them home and give them away. The photos show only the ones from the passing of a single year. Hello again and Mabuhay! I’m RemiJin Camping (@remijinphotography), back for day two of the WOPHAgrams takeover. Thanks for following along as I share more about my work and process.The creation process is fascinating, you can start with an idea, a plan of how you expect to continue with the work, but in the end, what you are working with speaks to you changes the plan. I had the idea of black and white film for the project. So wrong. It didn’t hold the vibrancy and life force that was my Mother. From there, color negative film was the fitting choice to showcase these objects my Mother had sent me throughout my life. She feels this is a fashion item necessary in my wardrobe. I rarely ever wear tube tops.Most of these necklaces come from my Mother’s trips to LA’s Chinatown or the downtown district, and sometimes I go with her when I visit. Giving gifts was her way of expressing her love, even though she used to forget what she gave me sometimes, she would check to make sure I have them, especially the jewelry and I do. Hello and Mabuhay! I am RemiJin Camping (@remijinphotography) and I am thrilled to take over WOPHAgrams this week. Thank you WOPHA for the opportunity to share my work!I am a Filipina-American photo-based artist and educator currently living in Pembroke Pines, FL. I am full time photo faculty at Barry University in Miami Shores, FL where I teach undergraduate and graduate analog, alternative and digital photography. I am also a resident artist at Studio 18 Art Complex in Pembroke Pines, FL and am represented by The CAMP Gallery in North Miami, FL.This week I’ll be sharing work and behind the scenes snapshots from the series, “A Mother’s Love” which is currently on view at Green Space Miami as part of the exhibition “Affective Archives”, curated by Amanda Morgan.This series opens up the cabinets, unboxes, and dusts off the things my Mother has given me throughout the years. Born out of the frustration with dwindling home space filled with items I didn’t use, these everyday items morphed from something mostly forgotten in storage and taking up space, to an appreciation for the meaning of inheritance, care, and legacy with which the items were given. This was a cathartic process of freeform pattern creation with the items that took anywhere from one hour to eight hours each to intricately make and photograph. This July, we’re pleased tointroduce RemiJin Camping (@remijinphotography) as part of #WOPHAGRAMS.RemiJin Camping is a Filipina-American artist. She currently lives in Pembroke Pines, Florida and works as an Assistant Professor of Photography at Barry University in Miami Shores, Florida where she teaches analog, alternative processes, and digital photography. Camping received her Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Barry University in 2021. Camping’s artwork thoughtfully creates photo-based works that explore themes of memory, emotions, and stories narrated through photographs of objects and locations and at time are then intervened with mixed media techniques. Sometimes the pieces are based on her own story, and other times they are another person’s story that she has connected with and has been moved to tell.
