Just over a week old, and Alden Hellmuth’s ‘Tether’ is still making waves. Celebrated as ”one of the most vital releases of the year“ by @allaboutjazzmedia, the record thrums with a simmering energy.

Justin Brown’s rimshots fly furiously, accompanied by bassists Logan Kane and Miller Wrenn — ”the fleet thrust and chunky interplay of these two is astonishing, letting them function as much like extra percussionists as harmonic knitters“ (@thewiremagazine). Hellmuth herself, who ”has created a style that is very much her own“ (@hilaryswriter), follows the intricacies of her compositions before cutting into improvisations that are free yet tethered.

Among @theobserveruk’s Album of the Week picks, ‘Tether’ is out now on all platforms and on limited-edition vinyl. Link in bio.

A week from today, my second album 'Tether' will be released.

It's a project conceived, composed, and created (from start to finish) during my time living in Los Angeles.

While in LA this past week, commuting across town to and from rehearsals, I was reminded of the many hours spent listening to music (or contemplating life/everything) on those same highways or during my 30 minute walk between my apartment and the UCLA music building.

Those hours spent alone listening and learning and questioning were invaluable to the development of this project (and my own development as an artist/human).

I'm not sure I can define my time living in LA, but I do know that it is a city filled with incredibly inspiring and special people.

This project means so much to me. I have endless love and gratitude for this band. Thank you to Miller and Logan, who with Ebs, truly helped form this idea into something much bigger (shoutout 8leg).

Thank you to Justin for understanding the vision and just being incredible.

Thank you to Yakiv and Paul for adding your distinct voices to this work and being the wonderful people you both are.

Thank you to Caleb, Shar, and Hannah for contributing the most perfect sounds and noises.

Thank you to Laura and Eli for making this record sound even more amazing than I could have ever imagined.

Thank you to Trent for the amazing artwork. And to Sam for your eye (and support since the beginning).

There are many more people to thank for this project (full post on my gratitude for @leiterverlag coming soon), and much more to share, but for now enjoy these lovely bts shots by Sam.

I truly cannot wait for this record to be out. Vinyl available via pre-order or where ever you see me. :) by @alden.hellmuth
