Chicago's Fifth Ward joins millions worldwide in honoring the legacy of the Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr.

From his days marching with the Rev. Martin Luther King to becoming a charismatic global leader in his own right, Rev. Jackson distinguished himself by carving his own path in the fight for human dignity, a fair society, and equal opportunity for all races through his unifying Rainbow Coalition, which spanned international and interracial lines.

Known merely as “Reverend” or “Jesse,” Rev. Jackson will also be remembered as our longtime neighbor, friend, and brother in the struggle for diversity and equity. Part of that quest included convincing another Fifth Ward resident, Congressman Harold Washington, to run for mayor. Rev. Jackson’s voter registration drives brought thousands to the polls and led to Washington’s election as Chicago’s first Black mayor.

On behalf of the Fifth Ward, I bid farewell with a grateful heart. My son, Jacob, and I extend our deepest condolences to the Jackson family. by @alderyancy5
