Out of the Ground and Into the Living.

Written by @isbn.billy for @disegnojournal sharing a story we felt we needed to tell on making space for the things we can’t control.

Words by Billy De Luca

The piece can be found in @disegnojournal Issue #42 on Transformation

Thank you Oli Stratford for making space for us to share this experience. by @alea_work

Thank you to everyone who joined us this past weekend to wander and learn in the mystical Fontainebleau Forest.

We felt the effects of the summer’s heatwaves, and as parts of the forest recovers from the recent fires, we were reminded of how constantly is changes and the role fungi play in these processes.

Hoping to make it back very soon for those who couldn’t make it this time.

WORKSHOP SEASON 2026 | Color Experiments with Fungi

This immersive workshop, led by design studio Aléa Work, explored color as a living, evolving process through fungi. Participants engaged in hands-on experimentation, dyeing with foraged mushrooms and natural pigments, while also experimenting with mycelium to degrade and transform color in existing textiles. Participants moved between individual investigations and collective experiments, testing pigments, growing mycelium on textiles, and documenting color transformations. Challenging the common perception of mycelium as monochrome, the workshop revealed an underexplored fungal spectrum in which color emerged through interaction, time, and material agency.

Season curated by : Guillermo Gil Fernández @guillegilfernandez & Pablo Sevilla @sevillaisnotacity

Back to Dirt expands on myco-fabrication by using local soil as a mold to grow objects from mycelium. This process bypasses existing steps and conditions of the process, such as sterilization, additional energy and plastic molds, while exploring the mycelium’s capacity to regenerate soils and reintroduce biodiversity. by @alea_work
