🚨 LONG POST ALERT 🚨

A year ago I was uncertain if I would ever work in education again.

I’ve talked to a few people who shared after five years in a field they felt the need to shift. I felt this too!

I had just experienced a semi-rough SY in a position I was over qualified for (yet still dominated) and I worked beside unsupportive administration and uninterested/ lazy colleagues.
This made my job 10x times harder.

Unplanned… I took a 1+ year to rest and reset.
I learned of my current position, Fall 2023. I was HIGHLY interested in the role but the wage was too low for the requirements, so I had to respectfully decline.

Spring 2024 I realized I missed working with scholars so I decided to work as campus support PRN for another district to help close the school year.

During this time; out of curiosity I revisited this district website to see their district increased their pay scale. They did.
I emailed the coordinator to inquire if she’d reconsider me now the salary scale is in a range I can accept.
She replied “Absolutely” and just gave me the job lol.
I didn’t need to reapply or re-interview. She sent my New Hire Recommendation to HR and it was accepted.

We are two weeks into the 24/25 SY. I’ve officially started my new role as a Discipline Assistant (DAEP). I’ll be providing additional Behavior Intervention district-wide to support teachers and elementary scholars who need a second chance 🙂‍↔️

If you know anything about my educational background, you know I have a passion for working with the Behavior Intervention Team.

I feel aligned with this “calling” and I’m hopeful this SY helps me fall in love in this field again 🤓

Our last day of the 23/24 SY was Friday 05/31.
Today is the second day of #SummerBreak and I’ve started reflecting over my short school year 🤓
I took the first photo on the last day.
I already miss some of the scholars 🥲
However, turning off that alarm ⏰ has been blissful ✨

Although I no longer work for this district.
My advocacy for them has extended beyond the school year I worked at their campus.

Last school year, three brown girls needed to be HEARD and I was the brown educator that LISTENED.
I love this for us 🫶🏽 💞

We’ve kept in touch and I’ve shown up to the events they’ve asked me to 🤞🏽

I took some time this week to provide campus support to a public charter school serving our PreK - 8th grade scholars. I enjoyed assisting them, their teachers and administration. I’d gladly return!

However, during my time with the scholars… I seen and heard things that made me reflect on how we need to be more self-aware of exposure to our scholars. We should protect them as best we can every chance we can! 🫶🏽
