I first went to the Locanda Cipriani on Torcello in the Venetian lagoon in 1972. Even though I was only eight years old I found it desperately romantic. Today, fifty four years later, I fell under its charm all over again. It’s been magnificently renovated and now has ten beautiful suites. A sublime lunch at Auffo, the new restaurant on the privileged premises of the former L’Epuisette in Marseille. This chic sea shack has gorgeous views of the Mediterranean and its seafood menus are visually beautiful, technically flawless and lyrically inventive. The little beach town of Sitges south of Barcelona has been a happy place for me ever since I first visited in 1982. It’s beautiful, warm, welcoming and profoundly Catalan at the same time it’s also cosmopolitan. It hasn’t gentrified but instead just gets better through smart urbanism and ever better restaurants.
