Vincent Van Duysen Designs a Secluded Sanctuary in Portugal

Guided by his principle of reduction — stripping things back until only what is necessary remains — Belgian architect Vincent Van Duysen has envisioned JNcQUOI Club Comporta as a place of harmony, slowness and material honesty.

Across 164 hectares of Portuguese landscape, his architectural language translates into villa forms defined by geometry and shadow, where the soul of the place slowly surfaces and guides every decision.

Spent the weekend sick in bed and ended up deep in my camera roll — back to our trip to the south of France last August. Wishing we were back there 🥹 staying with Rob’s aunt, making fresh jam, riding bikes around the teeny tiny towns and vineyards, the baguette vending machine (!!!)

If there ever was a poster child for making material reuse sexy it’s Crosby Studios 🤌

What a joy to interview and write this piece about Harry Nuriev and Tyler Billinger’s incredible farmhouse in Italy for @est_living’s new issue — out now.

There’s a magical, metallic touch to everything Crosby Studios does, but this one feels personal.

Wedged behind a Victorian terrace on a corner of two quiet bluestone laneways in Carlton, Laneway House occupies what was once a backyard pocket.

To find it, you have to navigate a sequence of narrow back streets that feel like a remnant of Melbourne forgotten by most.

MRTN Architects principal Antony Martin describes the surrounding laneways as time capsules, layered with a bricolage of additions
spanning every decade since the early 1970s, each with their own idiosyncratic materials and logic. As he points out, it’s the neighbourhood in Melbourne that has experienced the oldest continuous waves of gentrification. And it is this rich, slightly hodgepodge context that shapes everything about the project.

It’s not exaggerating to say this year’s Melbourne Design Week was the biggest one yet. At least it felt that way!
While I didn’t get to see as much as I would have liked — spending a few hours at Tactile Dialogues: Fragments of Matter was enough to fill my design cup.

Ryan, Nick and Anais, the work you put into this show is just incredible, the space felt welcoming and curated 👏

I’m so grateful to have hosted the panel talk in the workshop, speaking to ideas of craft, process and making alongside @other_matter, @craftvictoria, @studiodokolaglass, @ryanfernandesdesign and @madebymorgen

Fragments of Matter was curated by @ryanfernandesdesign and presented by @madebymorgen

Makers featured in the exhibition included:
@sarah_nedovic @v.brokkr @studiodokolaglass @rlfootedesignstudio @_jordanfleming @other_matter @frenchjessie @objectsforthought @jongoulder @emmadavies.art @nicholastrifilettiparfums

What happens in the hours before an object is finished?
The trials and failures, the moments where a material pushes back against the maker’s hand?

Join us for The Alchemy of Making, a panel talk presented as part of Tactile Dialogues: Fragments of Matter. This conversation brings together designers, makers and curators working at the intersection of craft, process and material.

From handcrafting and industrialisation, to emerging materials and the future of collectible design, the panel will trace what gets lost when we only see the finished object, and what we gain by taking a closer look.

Hosted by Aleesha Callahan, founder of @about_futures, with panellists: Nicole Durling, @craftvictoria Calum Hurley, @other.matter Nick McDonald, @madebymorgen Ryan Fernandes, @ryanfernandesdesign Curator

Saturday 16 May 2026 2.00 pm
Made By Morgen Showroom, Brunswick
Tickets are limited.

Panel Access AU$20
Concession AU$12
Book your place via the link in bio.

Presented by @madebymorgen as part of @melbournedesignweek, an initiative of the Victorian Government through @creative_vic, curated and delivered by @ngvmelbourne. Principal Sponsors: @milieu_property and @fisherpaykel #TactileDialogues

The irony of critiquing the harms of social media while still posting to it are not lost on me 😆

But a landmark case last week made me dust off the keyboard and pound away in a fervour. I think this might be the first time that irresponsible design is being called out (except maybe the walkie talkie building in London, but that’s just bad design 😂).

Curious what other people think as Meta and YouTube are found liable for causing harm based on its UX design features.

Outtakes from the @melbourneartfair Vernissage last week. So much beautiful work, and loving the launch of @futureobjekt 👏

A couple of highlights:
@bremperera’s Bollinger bar
@riveroshan at @gallerysallydancuthbert (biased because we just had Golnar Roshan on @creative.or.dead and she’s so amazing, the work speaks for itself)
@_jordanfleming and @studioceravolo’s lights
