Altar for the Protection of Trans Children, oil on linen, 45” x 34”, 2025.

From Anita Bryant to Moms for Liberty, the fascist cisheteropatriarchy has used the idea of protecting children as an excuse for bigotry. Meanwhile their policies kill LGBTQIA+ kids. I’m so angry. This painting took almost 2 years to make, and watching things steadily decline for LGBTQIA+ people -especially trans people- during this administration has been a horror.

Come see this painting among other works in Summer Spell, opening at @marinarogallery on Wednesday July 2, 6-8 pm.

Ever Baldwin, Erika DeVries, Clarity Haynes & Portia Munson

This exhibition celebrates the creative dialogue developed by these four artists over years of studio visits and shared conversations. Through mutual support and the exchange of ideas, their work has grown in ways shaped as much by mystery and chance as by intention. The meanings that emerge—sometimes inexplicable—are part conscious, part subconscious. To cast a spell is to bring about transformation. In times of political crisis, what power does art hold to effect change?

Summer Spell features installation, neon, found objects, altars, painting, drawing, and sculpture. The works explore themes including the power of the voice, LGBTQIA+ rights, ecofeminism, and embodiment.

This exhibition follows The River That Flows Both Ways, a recent presentation of the artists’ work at RUTHANN Gallery in Catskill, NY. @ruthanngallery

Hope to see you there! by @alesbiangaze

It is finally here! You can order your copy at the link in my bio. It’s been a year-long journey, and a longer journey before that. This book contains images from the late 90s until now. I am so grateful I don’t even know where to start. From @jaibrooks90 who was there for the beginning of the Breast/Chest Portrait Project, to @newdiscretions for publishing this book and encouraging me every step of the way, to @tbradway, @faenzaprinting_italy and D.A.P. for masterminding bringing the book to a new level of quality. Not to mention the amazing writers, thinkers, artists @ldevun, @whateverjeanne & @mysterious_fires who contributed text. @tompowelimaging took the most incredible photos of my work, and @elizabethjward @thisiscurio did the design magic for the book. My dear friend @jeanneobbard did the copyediting and proofreading, and @ktbklyn247 supported my studio practice on every level. THANK YOU to the generous people who contributed financially to the project! You know who you are! And thanks to everyone who takes the time to buy, read and enjoy this book. #clarityhaynes #newdiscretions #25years by @alesbiangaze

You know what to do! Repost from @marilynminter 💅 by @alesbiangaze

Crone Altar, oil on linen, 58 x 48 inches, 2026. Traditionally old age is associated with the season of winter. But this painting ended up being a kind of Primavera.

The image of the old woman is taken from a Jo Spence self-portrait in which she wears a crone mask. I love the ways we try on older selves and the ways we can queer ideas of time. What if time is a spiral? I’ve been enjoying reading Against Ageism: A Queer Manifesto, by Simon(e) van Saarloos. So much good food for thought.

Bodyology continues at New Discretions through November 28. And it’s open today!

Happy Halloween, witches.

See you there! by @alesbiangaze

Baby Dyke Altar is about the magic of being young & newly out in the early 90s. Lots of folks at the opening recognized the On Our Backs references! IYKYK! Part of my impulse is to tell our queer feminist history, as it’s so easily forgotten and erased. I started this painting at @macdowell1907, & the spotted pebble was given to me by another fellow, Clare Fentress (pictured in the last image). Thank you @macdowell1907 for the inspiration and support! #onourbacks #newdiscretions #clarityhaynes #bodyology #madeatmacdowell by @alesbiangaze

C u soon! by @alesbiangaze

Please join me for 𝑩𝑶𝑫𝒀𝑶𝑳𝑶𝑮𝒀, opening this Thursday, October 15, at @newdiscretions. This show is intended as a bodacious retort to Donald Trump’s inane and dangerous idea of “gender ideology.” It celebrates bodily autonomy and self-determination, mostly through large-scale torso portraits, but also through altars and a few crownings. Hope you can join us!
