2022 has had its ups and downs and been quite a challenge at times, on and off the bike, but I wouldn't change it. It's been an adventure and a learning curve that'll help drive and shape what happens next. Bring it on 2023.

It's wild that it's already been 3 months since the @pancelticraceseries wound its way around Éire in the scorching summer heat. With the race film now out, I've been prompted to reflect back on what was an unusual PCR for me...

Despite having a crack for the first 300km or so, I simply wasn't in a position to race this year's event as I normally would, in fact I very almost didn't even make the start line, let alone the finish. As bitterly disappointing as that was, I have to say my experience during the event has to be one of my favourite and most memorable.

I'll do a full recap with my photography to dive into the specifics another time, but for now thanks to @arielwojciechowski_com & @stillsbyceri for these beautiful shots 📸

So this is the part of the @theperfidiousalbion Wild Westcountry were my race first fell apart...

After a strong start reaching CP2, the half way point, an hour ahead of my nearest rival, I traversed Dartmoor into the early hours, climbing both Dartmeet and Widecombe before a long, fast and increasingly cold descent down Hay Tor and into to Bovey Tracy. Usually, as the night eases into morning, I find it energising, however, that wasn't to be the case this time... my stomach turned, twisted and cramped, I felt nauseous and by the time I'd reached Chudleigh, I'd had my hands on the wall retching up the the food I had eaten over the past few hours. I returned to my bike and carried on at an easier pace hoping it would ease, but anything I ate it would return up a few moments later. For the next 5 hours or so I managed to keep down just a handful of fruit pastels and some water. By the time I reached Sidmouth I was running on empty, with blood shot eyes and my lead was down to a hair width. Shortly after a walking up the 2nd half of the steep climb out of the town, Rhys passed me, I tried to follow but could not. I plodded on to the next village where I sat for a few hours, delicately eating maybe a total of 3 strawberries, half a small white baguette and gently sipping on some water. After a few other riders passed a slowly proceeded on through Axminster, I could pedal my way up the more gentle climbs, but had no energy to ride up the steeper ones. Eventually I made my way to Bridport and got myself a hotel. I was out of the 'race' but after being defeated by the route last year I was determined to complete the course...

What a difference a year makes... last year I was pushing my bike up this climb (and many of the climbs before and after it), hating myself, feeling shit, and questioning how I had managed to let myself lose so much hard fought fitness. This year however, I was feeling good, powerful and had managed to position myself a good 20km+ ahead of the rest of the race without putting a foot down. The race may have eventually got away from me, but that's another story, for now I'm just happy with the progress and sense of a returning to form.

Really love this sequence heading up Dunkery Beacon, with the south coast of Wales in the background.

Zooming round the lanes out west, on the edge of the known world. That road (from St Just to St Ives), has to be one of my favourite stretches of tarmac to cycle.
