I spent Black August in London getting to know Claudia Jones 🖤🇹🇹

I was able to visit a few sites from her prolific final fifteen years in the city, all while reading @kelseymxmo’s copy of Carole Boyce Davies’ seminal work, “Left of Karl Marx”— the title referring to the placement of Jones’ gravestone left of Marx’s huge bust in Highgate Cemetery, pictured here.

I’ve barely scratched the surface and highly recommend everyone deepen their relationship to Jones’ life and work, but thought I’d share some reflections on the ‘gram! >>

Claudia Jones was many things, including: working class Afro-Caribbean immigrant (Bronx via Trinidad), journalist, anti-imperialist feminist, community organizer, and communist with a lifelong commitment to advancing the Marxist-Leninist cannon.

Her work in the Party and in the streets from youth to high ranks and influence inevitably put her in the crosshairs of the state during the early McCarthy-era red scare.

She was jailed four separate times for her political work before being deported.

Medical neglect and abuse by the US prison system was a large contributor to her premature death in 1964 in London.

Was able to catch a sweet screening of “Looking for Claudia Jones” with @abby_imperial. Put on by @blackobsidian_soundsystem at their pre-Carnival event!

This 50 min documentary by Nia Reynolds specifically focuses on Jones’ time in London and features very special first hand anecdotes of folks who knew and loved Claudia. Her impact is immeasurable.

My trip also coincided with the 60th anniversary of Notting Hill Carnival, an annual street festival celebrating Black and Afro-Caribbean culture.

After her exile from the US, Claudia Jones’ work in London focused largely on organizing this diaspora, one strategy was reinvigorating the Caribbean tradition of “carnival” or “masquerade”.

Starting from small dancehalls, her events became a staple for cohering Black British identity and international+cross racial solidarity. The seeds she planted are widely considered to have grown into what is now Europe’s biggest street festival.
