A year of Colours

Marking just over a year since i joined Colours and an update on life.
Prior to joining Colours, i spent a couple of years travelling Asia in a humanitarian agency providing disaster relief to vulnerable communities hit by disasters. I loved my job, having come from social service and then going into coordinating humanitarian efforts internationally. But last year i took a leap of faith to join Colours, a non-profit start up. I struggled with the decision to move as i wanted to stay and continue building my career and my pay. But at the same time i knew where i was currently was not where im supposed to be in the long run.

1 year in, im thankful for the move and everything that happened. Despite the challenges and work of a start-up, I feel my heart greatly aligned. And im incredibly grateful

Now at Colours, we serve vulnerable communities in Asia. And a big part of our work involves bringing young people along on the journey. i went on my first humanitarian trip when i was 17, serving the Karen people being persecuted by the military junta. I think the trip changed the trajectory of my life, not necessarily to be a missionary, but just enlarging my perspective of the world and the life on what matters

Thankful to friends that we grew up with also coming with us, what a blessing to be able to do this with people you know and love. And also excited for more friends to come with us ❤️ by @alexprak

GIVE OR GO, JOIN US IN MAKING CHANGE POSSIBLE. 🚀

1 year ago, we threw a vision, took a man’s HDB downpayment and threw ourselves to building something for the nations.

The result?
A movement that is making CHANGE POSSIBLE.

The Colours Foundation is an invitation for you to go serve the world outside your window. Nothing is too small for impact, the real question is… are you willing?

There’s more to build and we won’t do this alone. Join us soon!

GIVE, GO, CHANGE THE WORLD ❤️

Got humbled by the sea yesterday 🌊

I thought this race was going to be a simple 500m swim and 2.5km run, especially since I swam 3x that distance in my previous race.
I was soo wrong.

Minutes into the swim, i got water in my goggles. I was already far enough from shore that I couldn’t feel the ground so I started treading water to stay afloat while trying to fix them.

While trying to sort out my goggles, the waves kept hitting and I ended up choking on seawater.

Everything went downhill from there. I started gagging, couldn’t get my breathing back under control and completely lost my swimming rhythm.

I tried to keep going for a while but eventually swam to the nearest swimming rope. Took me a good 10–15 minutes to calm down, catch my breath and slowly make my way back.

By the time I finished my first lap, I wanted to just drop out and go home

Then I saw xuan sitting by the beach looking in my direction. I thought about how I made her wake up at 6am and come all the way here just to watch me not finish

Little did I know, she was thinking the complete opposite. She saw me struggling in the water and was sitting there hoping I would stop and go home 😂

I went back in for the next lap. Still struggled and still felt like vomiting because of all the seawater i drank. Eventually found my rhythm again and finished the swim and run.

Another one for the memories 🏊🏼 by @alexprak

Over the years, I’ve become increasingly convinced that people don’t only want to know that something good happened. They want to understand what we are trying to change, whether it is actually working, what we are learning and whether there is a bigger possibility worth putting their weight behind.

That is part of why we open up our world every year.

This is the Colours Open House.

From 9–15 November, we are opening up the work of Colours Foundation across a number of sessions. We’ll share updates from the ground, go deeper into work like Home Sweep Home, our migrant communities, and BrainBuddy, and talk honestly about what has worked, what has been difficult, and what we are still trying to figure out.

I have never wanted Colours to become an organisation that simply gets good at telling sad stories so people will give. The individual matters deeply, but we must also actively and intentionally build things that change the conditions around people, so the same problems do not keep repeating themselves.

This is also our annual fundraiser, and we are hoping to find people who want to help us build the next stage of the work with greater depth, better systems and much greater reach.

If you have supported us before, volunteered with us, followed from a distance, or simply wondered what Colours actually does, I would really love for you to come.

Once a year, we gather together.

To show you what we’ve done AND to let you into the work.

Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Myanmar, Malaysia, Singapore, all in one room.

From 9–15 November 2026, we’re opening our doors for a week of curated gatherings, meals and experiences with our local and overseas teams.

If you’ve only watched from a distance, this is your invitation to come closer.

If you’ve journeyed with us before, you are going to be encouraged, again.

See the work changing lives and circumstances across the region, meet the people, hear the stories and be part of the story.

10.5km run · 1.5km swim · 10.5km run. Done⚡️

Been living out something ive been learning over the past couple of years that has been kind of freeing for me. That motivation, passion and feelings are pretty overrated. Some things in life don’t have to feel exciting or purposeful all the time. Like brushing your teeth or not bingeing on unhealthy food all the time. You don’t feel passionate about these things everyday but you still do it.

Started being really intentional about routines and daily habits (the book Atomic Habits was honestly really helpful in building habits that lasts for me). Exercising, reading, writing, sleeping on time, eating healthier. Still not consistent yet but something im working towards.

Exercise and fitness felt like the most easiest place to begin, it was something physical and measurable. I started running even though I used to genuinely hate it. For awhile it was awful but it stopped feeling horrible after some time (also because i learnt that one of the best tips to running fast and long is actually just more slow and easy runs). Stopped relying on feeling and made it a habit to show up even if it was a half-assed effort. And then i signed up for this race 9 months ago to seriously challenge how far i could discipline myself into training.

Learning to apply this to life, family, work, finances and everything else. If there are some things in your life you feel really “passionate” about, great. If there isn’t, doesn’t matter. Find your north and still work at it anyway 🤷🏻‍♂️⬆️

Lastly, Happy early Anniversary to my wife (ex gf), who sees me try to navigate life, fails, wins and walk with me. Makes everything just a bit sweeter ❤️ taken in East Coast Park by @alexprak
