5 years ago, my mother died.
It feels weird to call it an anniversary. I feel like anniversaries imply celebration. It doesn’t feel like a celebratory day.

The first picture is one of my favorites of us. My parents were visiting me at college in Philadelphia. I remember it being senior year and my hair length seems to confirm that. There was an art fair in Rittenhouse Square and my mother and I got our faces painted. Dad took the pic. That trip they also saw my senior piece for my choreography final and helped me get ready to set out on my first professional job. I remember the fun we had and them being proud of me.

The second picture is of my mother’s arm. She was in her hospice bed which happened to be stationed in my childhood bedroom. Some of the trophies I accumulated in school and never got rid of for one reason or another were lining the windowsill. At the moment of this picture, 10:12AM, if the timestamp info is right, a ray of sunlight shined through one of the trophies and left a rainbow on my mother’s arm. I don’t know why, but in the midst of all the tears, care and morose waiting, that rainbow gave me a moment of peace. Maybe even a reminder that no matter what everything would be alright. Just hours later, she was gone.

Grief has no time limit and no correct coded course. 5 years later I still feel all the things about it. Angry that she was taken so soon. Befuddled as to why. Glad she’s no longer in pain. Happy she went as quickly as she did. Sad she went as quickly as she did. Mostly, I fell grateful that I had her as a mother for the time I did. I know that in that way I’m lucky. And I hope I’m still making her proud. by @alexringler
