a few months ago, my eyes were watching everybody I loved scattered across my crib helping me fold everything I own into a 8x8 storage unit— wine and childhood stories and insider jokes and love song falsettos and soft prayers spilling over from one room to the next— as I negotiated what of mine was worth wrapping in soft paper to keep vs. what of mine was worth setting free.

then I left the country on a one way yallllll. my people were like go live—but come home, lol you not grown.

I spent my weeks amongst unfamiliar accents who still speak man’s most common babel: wine, stories, bread-breaking, song, and prayer.

and then I came back to the states to a new home, in a new city where people call me alexus, lex, or alabama.

all this to say—
i’ve been thinking about zora neale hurston’s opening line, “ships at a distance have every man’s wish on board.” all that poetry to warn us about living a life of longing instead of belonging.

at 28, i feel most proud about building a full life.

not waiting on the shore with daydreams as I squint at the sun, but instead remembering—

I am the sun.
