We were happy to connect with nearly 100 students and their families on Tuesday night to celebrate and share the artwork of ACPS student winners in this year's PTA Reflections contest. Before digging into our special Reflections-themed cupcakes from MB Bakery (thank you!), Delegate Kirk McPike and ACPS Chief Financial Officer Dominic Turner joined us to recognize these young artists. Many thanks to them, as well as our art teachers and Reflections chairs for making this year's citywide contest and celebration a success. Four of these artists were recognized at the state level and Callie Coyne advanced to the national competition and WON! As part of the Alexandria PTA Council's (PTAC) continuing effort to advance family equity in Alexandria City Public Schools, we are participating in this year's Spring2ACTion campaign to raise funds for our PTA units that operate with fewer resources. “As other neighboring jurisdictions increase their investment in their school systems, we must stay competitive in order to recruit and retain the amazing teachers that have been so impactful in my daughters’ educations.  Over the past 11 years, my daughters have had teachers who made learning fun and relevant. These educators have built their skills and their confidence and they have made school a place where my girls want to be. I know these teachers want to stay in ACPS, too, but we need to make it financially possible for them to do so.”

PTAC President Teri G spoke in favor of supporting the 3.5% budget ask to support teacher pay increases.

PTAC, BAC, School Board, and the EAA stood together this morning to advocate for the ACPS budget. Thanks to the PTA members that also spoke at Monday night’s hearing.

We need city council to support the ACPS budget request of 3.5% to show our teachers they are just as important as every other city unionized employee. The time is now to support public education.

Thanks to Volunteer Alexandria for honoring the heart work PTAs put into ACPS. Several of our PTA leaders and volunteers were chosen by their schools for this annual event. Extra thanks to Executive Director of Community Partnerships and Engagement, Taneika Taylor Tukan, who helps our PTAs engage in their community all year long. We’re so lucky to have her at ACPS!

It’s time to tell our city that our teachers deserve the same consideration all of the other unionized employees in the city have received. We’re thrilled for our friends in police and fire, as well as the other unions.

The ACPS-EAA CBA released last week is thoughtful and is an important chance for our city to collectively say “yes, we value the work of our educators too.” Sign up to speak at one of the two city council meetings this week.

All Virginia PTAs are an umbrella of Virginia PTA, a mission driven advocacy organization (the largest and oldest non-partisan volunteer child advocacy association in Virginia!) that supports advocacy based on state and national resolutions and position statements. One of the biggest positions that VA PTA holds right now is that we must fully fund our schools and adequately compensate our teachers in order to produce a generation of students with the skills to leave high school and go on successfully to further education or join the workforce. JLARC 2023 showed us how far behind VA has been in adequately staffing and funding our schools. With public education being attacked at the federal level, let’s not attack it at the local level as well.

Support our schools. Support our teachers. Support our students.

The budget is out and so is the very first collective bargaining agreement for teachers. The proposed 1.5% budget increase won't cover it, but 3.5% (as requested by school board) will. Sign up on the city council website to make public comment starting Monday. by @alexvaptac
