Tomato season may be coming to an end, but the next chapter for Sugo! is just getting started. We’re near the finish line of post-production, and are excited to share some of the stories we’ve uncovered that didn’t make it into our documentary.

This is the first of a few short films starring the legend with Leo from @famiglia_baldassarre reminiscing on food, family, and traditions (and some rules).

Another short film. Another artisan carrying on tradition.

We met Giovanni at @cantinebenvenuto in 2023 while filming in Calabria, and immediately fell in love with his passion and enthusiasm for his craft.

The entire team at Cantine Benvenuto was beyond generous—a kind of hospitality we encountered again and again while travelling through Calabria to shoot our feature documentary, Sugo!

Cantine Benvenuto will always have a special place in my heart. The hospitality was incredible, but what stayed with me most was the dedication to tradition, winemaking and craft. Giovanni and the team reminded me that passion can only take you so far—it takes hard work and determination to make something meaningful.

That’s something I’ve carried with me in my own filmmaking, and especially in our team’s determination to finish Sugo!

La Storia di Casa Comerci. Elaborating on our previous “stroncatura” video, this short film is led @rossssss85com as she tells us about the origins of the vineyard and how she is carrying on the tradition of winemaking with the idea of passing it onto future generations.

In 2023, when we began principal photography, our second block took place in Italy. Starting in Abruzzo and ending in Calabria, we went to meet Vito Teti, the anthropologist and writer but along the way we were treated to a tour of @casacomerci by thanks to @cugliari29 While there, we saw the beautiful vineyard and were treated to an incredible lunch.

A lot of this footage didn’t find its way into our feature, but it was too good to not show everyone, so here is part 1 of 3 videos from Calabria.

Stroncatura is a recipe that dates back to the 18th century and was a result of poor factory workers collecting wheat swept up from their daily work. Today, it’s produced in the shape of linguine and is a delicious dish. The Mezzogiorno always found a way!

The recipe is made by Rosa Comerci @rossssss85com and features the ingrediente secret @deorumcibus Nduja Essentia.
