Another short film. Another artisan carrying on tradition.

We met Giovanni at @cantinebenvenuto in 2023 while filming in Calabria, and immediately fell in love with his passion and enthusiasm for his craft.

The entire team at Cantine Benvenuto was beyond generous—a kind of hospitality we encountered again and again while travelling through Calabria to shoot our feature documentary, Sugo!

Cantine Benvenuto will always have a special place in my heart. The hospitality was incredible, but what stayed with me most was the dedication to tradition, winemaking and craft. Giovanni and the team reminded me that passion can only take you so far—it takes hard work and determination to make something meaningful.

That’s something I’ve carried with me in my own filmmaking, and especially in our team’s determination to finish Sugo!

Grazie mille 🇮🇹🍷

La Storia di Casa Comerci. Elaborating on our previous “stroncatura” video, this short film is led @rossssss85com as she tells us about the origins of the vineyard and how she is carrying on the tradition of winemaking with the idea of passing it onto future generations.

Thank you again to @cugliari29 for introducing us.

In 2023, when we began principal photography, our second block took place in Italy. Starting in Abruzzo and ending in Calabria, we went to meet Vito Teti, the anthropologist and writer but along the way we were treated to a tour of @casacomerci by thanks to @cugliari29 While there, we saw the beautiful vineyard and were treated to an incredible lunch.

A lot of this footage didn’t find its way into our feature, but it was too good to not show everyone, so here is part 1 of 3 videos from Calabria.

Stroncatura is a recipe that dates back to the 18th century and was a result of poor factory workers collecting wheat swept up from their daily work. Today, it’s produced in the shape of linguine and is a delicious dish. The Mezzogiorno always found a way!

The recipe is made by Rosa Comerci @rossssss85com and features the ingrediente secret @deorumcibus Nduja Essentia.

Grazie mille per l’ospitalità ai nostri nuovi amici. Scusa se ci ho messo così tanto!

Tomato season may be coming to an end, but the next chapter for Sugo! is just getting started. We’re near the finish line of post-production, and are excited to share some of the stories we’ve uncovered that didn’t make it into our documentary.

This is the first of a few short films starring the legend with Leo from @famiglia_baldassarre reminiscing on food, family, and traditions (and some rules).

"Mouthful" was one of my favourite experiences as director of photography. This feature film took us a whole summer to shoot and a whole year to finish. Restricted by a low budget, the team would get together on weekends and shoot long dialogue scenes set in and around Richmond Hill. With a fantastic cast and a stellar crew, as well as the strong vision of our fearless leader Alfio Foti, this film turned out to be greater than the sum of its parts.

This pic of pensive-yet-satisfied-looking me from the 26 Hot Docs Luncheon hosted by the Italian Trade Agency helped me complete a mini-image-medley to showcase the growth and progress of @sugothefilm - a film that truly started as @alfiodfoti and @celina.fazio ‘s tiny passion project, but soon enough became something that I, myself, started caring about so much. So far, Sugo! has been receiving guidance (and love) as a @cmf.fmc Delegation, and had a great time at @sunnysidedoc and @hotdocsindustry. With the locked cut approaching, we are excited to see where this colourful, delicious and beyond fun doc will take us next!

OTHER KINDS OF PLEASURE
Alfio Foti, Canada, 2025, 13 mins

Please join us for our annual Valentine’s Day-adjacent screening (a holiday invented by Hitler to sell tulips). In the evening’s feature, a father and his teenaged daughter, Mette, are holed up at home over the Christmas holidays while Mr.’s wife lies in hospital preparing to give birth to Mette’s long gap sibling. She is starting to see boys and he is growing protective and even jealous of her hunky suitors, prompting him to act in a sometimes pathetic manner. Incestuous tensions simmer but never boil. One might call this the IN THE MOOD FOR LOVE of daddy/daughter relations. Jesper Klein, who portrays the father, strongly resembles Layne Price, the cucked-to-death Briton from MAD MEN. Mette, for her part, looks not unlike a lady Lars Ulrich.

Alfio Foti’s newest short concerns a middle-aged writer and video journalist (Christian McKenna) who compromises his working relationship with his much younger producer (Lea Rose Sebastianis) when he professes his love for her.
