In early January 2017, Frederik Duerinck —a documentary filmmaker turned artist-technologist— was commissioned to create in collaboration with IFF (and under the guidance of their project lead Anahita Mekanik) an extraordinary exhibition exploring the future of olfactive experiences.

Having crafted several multi-sensory art installations, he’d already dabbled in scent and scent design, captivated by its intimate, visceral impact on the human experience.

During a workshop with scientists and perfumers, inspiration struck: what if he could built a machine that let people play with and craft their own scents?

After months of relentless nights in a New York workspace, ‘Algorithmic Beauty’ emerged as a standout work in the Avant Garden exhibition.

The concept was alive, a prototype in hand, but Frederik didn’t want his creation confined to museums as speculative design—he wanted it to break free, really democratizing perfume and scent design for all.

To make that vision real, he estimated needing at least 2.5 million dollars to develop the technology. But he knew no art fund would ever bankroll such an audacious ordeal…

Algorithmic Perfumery needed to become a start up: developing & growing to sustain itself. To not only be a commentary on the industry but really affect change in how every human can interact with scent.

Criei um perfume só meu!

Durante a exposição INTER-CRIATIVIDADE, do FILE Festival, no Centro Cultural FIESP, conheci a instalação Algorithmic Perfumery. A experiência começa com uma conversa com IA que vai guiando você por memórias, referências e imaginação até chegar a uma fragrância única que depois ela é criada ali mesmo.

Para o meu, pensei em uma noite de Halloween de filme americano: fria, misteriosa e um pouco estranha. O resultado foi um perfume completamente diferente de tudo que tenho na coleção, com uma personalidade muito própria.

A exposição fica em cartaz até 11 de outubro e a entrada é gratuita. Vale muito a visita, principalmente para quem, como eu, acredita que perfume também é uma forma de contar história.

The Festival Internacional de Linguagem Eletrônica is the biggest arts and technology festival in Brazil. We are very exited to be back at this amazing festival and look forward to meet many of you.

Algorithmic Perfumery was born from a simple question: what if each person could create their own fragrance? Conceived as an object of curiosity, the installation invites the public to engage in a dialogue with themselves. Through interaction with artificial intelligence, visitors explore memory, imagination, preferences, and identity, creating a unique fragrance throughout the process. The sense of smell is one of our deepest senses. It shapes emotions, evokes memories, and influences us long before we are even aware of it. By combining technology and perfumery, Algorithmic Perfumery creates a space for curiosity, reflection, and self-discovery.
