I sauntered into the precious Austrian bread boutique, RYE when it opened last week on Lafayette Street. As a bread (and rye) snob and baker I had to check it out. Gorgeous space. But how the hell are they going to make money on litte openfaced sandwiches and one stupid expensive round of bread? The answer is that a quarter loaf set me back $15โ€” for 380 grams. (A loaf is $60 for--- 3.35 pounds!) Thatโ€™s what curiosity and laziness cost me (for not baking that week). Is it good, cost set aside? Itโ€™s. O.K. Could be moister, could be tangier, could be crustier and having just come back from Paris where bread is a right and not a privilege --where a loaf double the weight would cost in a good shop --maybe 12euros-- infuriated me. On the other hand I had a fabulous conversation with a woman named Colombe, whom I had just met, a fellow baker, talking about crumb, sourness, over-proofing and fresh milled grains in Gowanus. And that made it all worthwhile. What it did make me realized is that I need to work on my rye technique, I could make a killing. For sure it would be more lucrative than writing. by @alice.feiring

There is a lot of discussion over a winning short form piece that won an award from London that probably was written heavily with AI. This is my reaction to it. I hope youโ€™ll read but also please read the fabulous articles by @henrygjeffreys and @carter.felicity. We all bring something else to this conversation that really needs to be had. The publishing world is up in arms about A.I. Why has it taken so long for any of us to react in public in the wine writing community? Oh, and make sure you read the comments! Has A.I. so warped our ears that we hear slop as real writing? Or is perhaps we are judging this as a writing award instead of what it states, a communication award? So much to say. Last night, I held a wine class for the Keenan Bhatia law firm. "The Soulful World of Natural Wines." Mostly beginners, my goal was to change their relationship with wine (which was almost none). I began with a quote from the Paleoanthropologist, Ian Tattersall, "wine has since the earliest times played a special role in human life, both as an emblem of civilization and as an enhancement of our experience of the world. There is, quite simply, nothing to replace it." From there? Georgia (5000 years later to) Homer, Plato, Cato the Elder, Plutarch. And then, the wines. For the non-drinker there was one of the finest alternatives I know of, Gut Feeling from @gutoggau. For the others?
COฬ€SMIC VINYATERS โ€” FADES DEL GRANIT PEฬT-NAT (angular, refreshing a touch of strawberry.) RAMAZ NIKOLADZE โ€” MOTSKOBILI '24 (apricot pit an flesh, decant and be wowed.) For the what is natural wine lecture-- I blinded them on two chardonnays. DU GRAPPIN โ€” MAฬ‚CON-LUGNY โ€œLES CHARMESโ€ '23 against JaM BUTTER (NV). PERFECTLY UGH! The Butter was sickly sweet, buttered popcorn; the wine hurt. The point was beverage vs. fermented place. Most got it. One participant named it "Southwest Airline." What followed? Alas, a slightly mousy TSCHIDA โ€” HIMMEL AUF ERDEN GC 24. This hurt because you know, Tschida's wines are briliant. If you have a bottle, hold it a bit. This will resolve. (plenty of people enjoyed it nevertheless). Up next? @rajatparr Scythians Palomino from ancient vines in LA's Cucamonga Valley An unexpected favorite, (not a novice wine by a long shot) with some zippy dried plum and fresh walnut. 2025 @2naturkinder BLACK BETTY 2025 was so good: a great example GlouGlou. (Fun fact, this will age.) The VENIER โ€” LES HAUTS DE MADON 2025. (Needs time. A bit more extracted than usual-but clean and lovely). A sweetheart of the evening? @kamarapurewines SHADOW PLAY 2022. From N. Greece, all Ximanavro. Juicy tannins, brilliant zing of acid. Hibiscus. Love to @jennyfrancois for donating the Gut Feeling and Shadow play. And to @josepastorselections for the Cosmic pet'nat..... And goal achieved! much love to EE and Sonal for giving me this opportunity. #wineeducation #naturalwine by @alice.feiring

found this in my older brotherโ€™s papers this morning and thought this was useful info (46 years later) and historically significant. On May 1 1970, a few days before the horrific killings at Kent State there was a large protest at Yale in support of the Black Pantherโ€™s Bobby Seale and Ericka Higgins bogus murder trial ( eventually dropped). Given ICE is this is very relevant and I wish this information was as wide spread today as it was back then. Police violence was so prevalent in those days โ€” as todayโ€” it was civilian replant to know how to deal with tear gas, arrest, bullets, bruises, macing, bleeding and shock. For those who have attended anti-ice trainingโ€” anything done today that was not done then? BTWโ€” take a look at those speakers and music. And in the end? Yale participated and helped. The protest was peaceful. But 3 days laterโ€” Kent. by @alice.feiring

Very distressed to hear of another passing. Pascal Potaire who was a master of pet'nat, was a remarkabe friend to friends, a mentor and an example. The last time I saw him, after the closing chapter of Les Capriades, I was treated to the most phenomenal retrospective alongside of friends, Marie Rocher, Thierry, Mads, Nathan and John. It was a tough time for him, but still there were stories and laughs and love. Yet another lesson of fragility. May he rest in peace, I know his inspiration will be with us for a long time. by @alice.feiring

The 4 wines over the last few weeks that made me realize its profundity. Strong and true. And something real to hang on to in the age of corruption and despair. We canโ€™t all see it. Or feel it. The way we canโ€™t all love the same music of film โ€”but for those who see the world through the same lens I doโ€”- by @alice.feiring

We'll go beyond the fancy places to where people are working heroically, following their dreams more than their brand. We'll eat, drink and live well. I can't wait to return to Carema and visit some new discoveries as well. I am so looking forward to this one.

Temuri Ugulava died in the early hours of June 22 while undergoing treatment for lung cancer. He was 56.

I feel honored to have known him, to have written about him, to have seen and experienced his vision, especially in Udabno, what appears to be the largest regenerative farm on that side of the world. His dedication was mad genius and utterly sincere. Having come of age during the difficult years of Soviet collapse and its aftermath, he went on to become one of the people who helped reshape modern Georgia. He did so with generosity, enthusiasm, and an abiding love for his country. He was an extremely lovable man whose impact reached far beyond wine.

He was deeply loved, and he made an enduring difference in the country he cared for so passionately.

I wrote the story I've posted on my Substack (paywall lifted--feiring.substack.com) last year for Air Mail. It covered the way he came to natural wine and saw it as a change delivery system for Georgia.

My heart goes out to his children and his wife, Nato, who was such a good sport about this particular article. by @alice.feiring

In the world before social media it was almost okay to write about hidden people and places because word was so slow to get out. Overnoy, for example was virtually unknown to the world before the fire of instagram. So what do you do? Not write the story for fear of ruining them? For fear of the next Bologna being overrun by tourists? Shout out the next wine destined to be sought after? Or stay silent. But I feel in this case, the vigneron and wines are safe, because while everyone, needs and wants recognition--some people really just want to take care of their vines, and do their own grafting for fun. After first tasting these wines in 2022, I finally headed to the Jura to find out what they were about. Shout out to Sean for booking. To Christina for translating and Ceri for riding shotgun. Not quite the whole story and no tagging. But a few hints what will be coming to my substack. I met a vigneron Iโ€™ve been eager to visit for 5 years. My instinct? Confirmed!! And I also made a vow not to visit anyone I knew. This was a great sojourn to the Jura. We stayed in a crappy air b n b with a terrifying parking situation ( enterprise let me off the hook). The heart and collaboration and generosity of the wine community is fierce. And thanks to the importance of their cheese industry the land is almost safe from monoculture. A moving visit. Thanks to all ( and Florine for the soup!). โค๏ธ #juraforever by @alice.feiring
