My mom, Holly Duffy Walls, passed away Saturday evening after a long illness. She was surrounded by loved ones throughout her last week and we all had a chance to say goodbye and comfort her which I will be eternally grateful for. While we are heartbroken, I think it’s important to celebrate her and everything she gave us, and how it lives on. I think of her deep love of reading whenever I see Lucy absorbed in a book, and I think of her reverence for the natural world and how she shared that with us. She would’ve loved seeing the deer and brand new fawn in the woods where she’d go walking when she still could, and the bees pollinating her garden this morning after she’d passed - the beautiful patterns of life thrumming onwards, and the gift that it is to get to witness it while we’re around. We said goodbye to Kolo this morning. She got into a scrap in the backyard the other night and the injuries proved too much for her, but thankfully she seemed peaceful and comfortable in her last day and night. She was a great cat and lived a nice long life to the age of 18. So many memories - from being just kids in Ann Arbor when we first took her home, delighting in her kitten wildness, to lazy saturdays with her in Chicago apartments, to watching Lucy and Violet play with her. I explained about Kolo dying to the girls and Violet said Kolo was “going to another house” which is a nice way to think about it. I’m so glad I got to share such a full part of my life with this hilarious creature, and that the girls got to know her. I’m so glad so many people I love got to pet her and, if they petted her in slightly the wrong way, got a little bite from her. We’ll miss you Kolo. by @alienlanes
