Well, that was delightful. Thank you so much to @iheartradio for the Best Science podcast honor last night. An absolute joy be among podcasts I admire and meet so many other ghouls in my field. Thank you @katmburns for being a ride or die and documenting, and thank you to our @ologies team @mercedesdigsit Susan Hale @noellydil @jakechaffee @erintalbert @travlap at @wme of course lawfully wedded editor/hunk @jarrett_sleeper @mindjammediafor helping this show get out every week. Met him July 10, 2011, married him July 10, 2021, and now it’s been 5 years and I still hang on every word from his giant brain. Happy 250th Birthday to the Currently United States of America: an experiment that evolves every day. Societal complexity is an anomaly in human history, and with the hierarchies, supply chains & globalization comes higher costs per capita and increasingly marginal returns. Where are we on that stumble into rubble? I had no idea, and I was wrong about a lot of it. So this week’s 4th of July episode of @ologies is an actual word, #Collapsology, with scholar and historian Dr. Joseph Tainter. Did Nero reincarnate? There are some uncanny echoes of times past! The big dogs eventually die, but meanwhile we have to help each other through it and keep fighting the fascists trying to alpha the pack. I hope today is spent celebrating the spirit of disassembling the systems that aren’t working. by @alieward

Do you care about my roadtrip to the Southwest? GREAT. So today I fulfilled a six-year-long dream of meeting my favorite skunk expert, Dr. Jerry Dragoo, for an upcoming @ologies ep. I wore black and white socks in homage, and @jarrett_sleeper made me a shirt; it’s not yet available for sale but he’s made dozens of others via @jbstink. All bangers.

On an adrenaline high from talking to my new skunk buddy, we celebrated like it was my damn birthday and went to Campos at @lospoblanos and my shirt got me a compliment from a staff member and it turns out our server Tatiana and some staff (hey Josh! Hey Kieren! Hi Chef Chris!) were Ologies listeners so they gave us a kitchen tour, then we walked around the farm. I saw spiders, big fat cute ones (not pictured, sadly.) Later, went in a hot tub. In all, this is the kind of day I would cook up if I were plugged into in a hologram simulation. Thank you, New Mexico. So far so good. by @alieward

Hello from your mom and I in the American Southwest! My dream of interviewing skunk expert Jerry Dragoo comes true tomorrow. The journey has involved desert vistas, a tryst, a meteor crater, a flat tire in Sedona, an overnight in the lovely Cottonwood, and finally getting to cross New Mexico off my map. (West Virginia, you’re my last.) Also there are two videos I hope that you enjoy. I’m learning so much! by @alieward

Very huge thanks to @thewebbyawards for honoring @ologies with Best Science Podcast this year. Didn’t have to do that. But I love it. This was my first time attending the Webbys and 1. All acceptance speeches for all shows should be only 5 words. 2. My dress is a simple @onequince tank dress but with hand-embroidered embellishments dreamed up and crafted by couture gown designer @samantha.sleeper, who also did my wedding dress and is legally obligated to be my sister, which I love. I felt so myself and elegant in it and I plan on wearing this dress to anything anyone invites me to forever. 3. Also finally got to meet so many folks on the @patreon team AND @britprawat AT LAST. Brit had to leave before me and I ate the rest of her tiramisu before she even made it to the sidewalk. 4. Thank you to our core Ologies team: Susan Hale, @mercedesdigsit @JakeChafee & @noellydil for making it happen every week. An appropriate caption that explains that I am lucky to work wherever there’s wifi, and that I left the country for a few weeks with my husband’s family and it was really nice. Then an acknowledgement of how absolutely batshit fucked things feel and how it’s impossible to act normal when actual fascists are committing the worst crimes imaginable with the blessings of our courts. But then a reminder that there are moments every day we can steal back and hang on to. I don’t have much advice other than: try to add a walk in after dinner, or in the morning to hear the birds, be really sweet to the people you love, have a lot of grace for yourself, give what you can, scream til your throat bleeds, and make the bastards afraid. Huge news: there was free guacamole on the red carpet and they let me put a whole avocado in my purse. @katmburns is the best +1 a friendship can buy, and it was jtruly peachy to see pals old and new. I felt emotionally bad about throwing some socks away (we had been through so much together) so I cut them up and now when I need to dissociate I just keep making a bigger and bigger rug out of old socks by @alieward

Unmarked 🧊 van in DTLA with a human on its bumper. (He survived being run down; we gave him an ice pack and his friends took him to urgent care, where it probably cost a few grand to get seen due to for-profit healthcare. 🇺🇸) I’m so mad, anxiety and adrenaline won’t stop, we have PDFile racist ghouls running the world killing and kidnapping people on camera with no consequences to them no matter how much our throats bleed screaming.
