This is blowing our minds. It’s the Ologies 9th Anniversary episode – and the customary gift is willow (1). So I reached out to an artist whose work means a lot to me, and convinced world-renowned environmental sculptor Patrick Dougherty @patrickdoughertysculptor to chat about his work, and about willows in general (2). Twisting and tangling literal tons of willow saplings, Patrick and his crews create huge, site-specific sculptures that look like fantastical buildings, but made almost entirely of sustainably-sourced branches (3-11). I’ve loved his work for decades, and this chat was like a kid meeting their basketball hero. We also address: cleaning up ecology with willows, their spine-like roots, why some willows weep, plumbing follies, medicinal uses of willows, why they’re so bendy, the poetry that nature inspires, why sniffing sticks is healthy, the physics of birds’ nests, and reconnecting with the wonder you had as a child. Instant classic.

“It may be the most disgusting shot ever to air on PBS.”

This still from the 2009 Nature episode “Is That Skunk?” captures a close-up of a skunk’s anus the moment it sprays this week’s ologist, Dr. Jerry Dragoo.

“I got her tail up, blew her some kisses [on the butt], and I could just hear [the producers] looking at that video. They almost lost it. They were just like, ‘EUGHHHH!’”

Just another day for a Dragoo.

“All carnivores have scent glands, and most of them use them for territory-marking, boundaries, all that kind of stuff. Then skunks just developed them as more of a defense mechanism.”

And that color? Dr. Dragoo termed it “anal sack amber.”

Stomping skunks. Patron Dana asked us: “What’s up with their aggressive tippy-taps?”

In our latest episode, Mephitology (SKUNKS), Dr. Jerry Dragoo explains stomping is a primary warning sign a skunk feels scared or threatened:

“The first thing they’re gonna do is run away. If they can’t run away, they turn around and face you and they’ll do the stomps. If you don’t [retreat], they can get more aggressive. I’ve seen hog-nosed skunks just get up on their back feet, come down, and — BOOM — slam the ground.”

Like the most obvious “I am warning you: the stink is coming.”

And skunks can spray at a very early age, like this little one from sanctuary @the_pipsqueakery. Dr. Dragoo reports he was sprayed by a three-day old skunk:

“But it wasn’t that big a deal. It was more like a fart. As [skunks] grow up [their defensive spray] becomes very oily, so it’s harder for them to really let it go.”
