* Eight Book Recommendations To Support Your Anti-Racism Journey *

1. If you want to commit to your anti-racism journey, then one of these books is a good place to start.

Why I’m No Longer Talking To White People About Race by Reni Eddo-Lodge @renieddolodge

Black and British by David Olusoga

Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad laylafsaad

The Good Ally by Nova Reid @novareidofficial

My personal favourite, as a comprehensive guide, is The Good Ally by Nova Reid.

2. If you are looking to expand your mind and explore the world through a creative, informative lens, then enjoy these three stunning writers.

And Still I Rise by Maya Angelou

Your Silence Will Not Protect You by Audre Lorde

All About Love by Bell Hooks

Reading poetry, and receiving education and social commentary from a range of lived experiences connects us with a humanity that honours all voices.

3. Prioritise seeking out Black authors that write about topics you love.

Uprooting by Marchelle Farrell @afroliage

This is my current holiday read, Uprooting by Marchelle Farrell. The author talks about moving from the Caribbean to the English countryside. It is my favourite kind of book, a memoir dripping with sensual descriptions, while teaching us about the realities of systemic discrimination.

“That’s gay.”

I was sitting in the study area of my local library, sharing a table with three young lads studying for their exams.

They’d been a bit noisy but I’m used to it during revision season.

One shows another something on his phone, and the lad responds, “That’s gay.”

Using “gay” to mean pathetic or weak has been in circulation since the 1990s.

I’ve been running inclusion training for almost as long and have heard a full range of takes on this term. From people of all sexualities.

It goes from:

“This phrasing is deeply offensive.”

to: “But it doesn’t mean that kind of gay.”

Firstly, yes it does originate from homosexuality. And whether the users are equating it with us or not, there is a chance it can offend us.

So now that you know, don’t use it, please and thank you.

And do challenge it.

Allyship is standing up for us when we are not present.

And you don’t need to tell us what you’ve done.

Because when you share a story about homophobic language that you challenged, we are not focusing on the fact you demonstrated being an LGBTQ+ ally.

We are focusing on the continued occurrence of homophobia.

As I reflect, over the past twelve months I have heard this word being used in a derogatory way three or four times.

Not a huge amount.

But each time, It feels like a stone falls from my chest into the pit of my stomach.

Then, I feel irritated.

Then, I assess the risk of saying something, and my capacity for potential conflict.

Why am I telling you this?

I grew up with the Sticks & Stones rhyme, that ends: “words can never hurt you.”

Hard disagree.

And when we look at scholars who study discrimination, they tell us physical violence starts with “banter” that is left unchallenged.

So, it might feel like an innocuous comment. But how do you know?

📚The Good Ally: A guided anti-racism journey from bystander to changemaker by @alihendrycoaching

Every day’s a school day when it comes to our inclusion journey.

This week over on LinkedIn I’ve been talking about inclusive practices when it comes to having video cameras on in coaching sessions and webinars.

I have always assumed that Camera On demonstrates full engagement and participation from the client or webinar attendee.

And that’s my assumption!

Meanwhile, it discounts those who engage more freely when their camera is off.

There was even a tribunal about this topic, earlier this year.

So, rather than stating Camera On as an absolute, we invite the client to engage in the way that works for them. And highlight it in our onboarding procedures and T&Cs.

(And avoid being on the wrong side of the law.)

I was discussing this topic with some of my coaching community this week, and suddenly realised that my ego wants cameras on during webinars!

Because I want the thrill of watching the information land onto my participants.

But this ignores what could be right for them!

Do you find it easier to engage with the camera off? Share your thoughts below. ⬇️

We are never “done” with our inclusion journey.

But as we spend more time focusing on learning about discrimination, systems of power, and a range of lived experiences, we are more likely to spot subtle unfair treatment and inadvertent discriminatory language.

We become the person that others know will correct them when they cross the line. The person defending a marginalised community outside of their own, even (and especially) when there is nobody present from that community.
