Sustainable fashion wasn’t a trend when I graduated in 1998. It was just how I worked in a very eclectic way. My collection was called ‘A little Bit of Everything All at Once’. I was diagnosed with ADHD in 2024 which in reflection says a lot!

Looking back at these photographs from my graduate collection, I’m reminded that many of the things we’re talking about so much now were already part of my design practice nearly 30 years ago.

There was no Adobe Creative Suite. No AI. No online shopping. And certainly no Temu.

Instead, I was sourcing what already existed and asking what could this become?

Curtains from a charity shop became clothing.
Victorian damask tablecloths became tailored shirts.
Upcycled tailored trousers were transformed into something completely new.
Candlewick bedspreads were bonded with recycled fleece to create a tailored jacket.
And fleece made in the UK from recycled bottles became part of the collection.

Nearly 100% of my final collection was made using upcycled or recycled fabrics.

Seeing these images again during Sustainable Fashion September has made me realise that sustainability isn’t a new value I’ve adopted. It’s one I’ve carried with me since the beginning.

Maybe it’s time to go back to our roots — make less, make better, reuse what already exists and design with intention.

A moment in time, and a shadow of what was still to come.

I’ve always loved designing through projection, so while reminiscing I came across this image from 1997. Then I found another image I’d taken in 1996, when I was working in New York during my gap year — nearly 10 years before the tragedy that would change the city, and the world, forever.

Looking back at these photographs now feels strangely poignant. At the time, they were simply moments I captured because I loved the image. I had no idea how much history was still to unfold.

Sometimes photographs hold more than we realise when we take them. 🖤
