Hands of the Healer 🌹

Painted in the employee parking deck at Emory St Joseph’s Hospital, to honor and greet the healthcare workers as they enter the workplace each day.

This mural is about healing and contains many elements that are symbolic of healing work.

I couldn’t even tell you why, but in the early stages of designing I had the idea to use hands, and then when I reached out to former hospital chaplain and founder of the Stairwellness Project, Moira Bucciarelli, for ideas and she shared the following with me, I was blown away and knew I had to incorporate them into the artwork:

“…every year in hospitals chaplains do a blessing of the hands for all staff and especially nurses. We honor the healing work that our hands do every day. And with Covid and hand hygiene, we have become more aware of our hands. Hands heal, hold, and bless. Lots…to be said about hands, including the belief that we are Christ’s hands in the world.”

The hands are shown releasing orange butterflies, symbolizing health, healing, and freedom. The hands are liberating the butterflies in a burst of color to convey the healing energy that is channeled by the Healer to the wounded, and the ensuing freedom that is then bestowed upon the healed.

The pink roses and rose petals symbolize comfort, gratitude, and sympathy, all qualities which arise in the space of compassion held by the Healer.

Special thanks to @jodie.lauren86 for overseeing the project and to my honorary co-collaborator @paxetbene for the inspiration and encouragement. It’s truly been an honor and a pleasure to work with you both once again! 💜💗🙏

Congratulations @ramaglia_chef and @thedreamvortex!💚💙🧩 I hope you enjoy your special day tomorrow!!

Here’s a little piece I painted for the happy couple, inspired by the roses they planted by their mailbox, their favorite colors, and their special puzzle piece symbol. 🌹

Chalkboard refresh for @industrytavern in Buckhead!

This was the second time I’ve done the large chalkboard in the middle of their dining area. The first time was February of 2020 right before Covid. (We had no idea what was coming! 🤯)

It was an interesting challenge because they needed a design that would allow them to easily edit the menu items themselves, while keeping most of the layout the same.

The first time around I used all chalk since we didn’t know how permanent it needed to be, but since it lasted 6 years I decided to use paint this time so it would be a little more durable.

Swipe to see what it looked like before the recent update, and then before my original design in 2020 when the restaurant employees were doing it themselves. The last two pics show a couple of smaller boards that I did as well. My skills have really improved over the last 6 years! 🤯

Flower paintings vs their reference photos.

Some of these are murals and some are watercolor. As you can see, I like to play with color and push the contrast when I paint. ✨

I am not the best photographer, so I used to paint from stock images a lot, but lately I’ve shifted to painting from my own photos because it feels more genuine and authentic. So these are all my own photos minus the white rose, which was taken by my daughter. 💗

All of them are local wildflowers except the roses, which I’m not sure of the exact variety. I’d love to know what they are if anyone can identify them. 🙏🏻

Hi I’m Alison! Thanks for being here! I have some new followers, so I thought it’d be a good time to introduce myself.

I am a mural artist based in metro-Atlanta. I am 40 and thriving, and I live in Acworth, GA with my 7-year-old daughter, Claire.

I have a degree in drawing and painting from Georgia State University. I also studied graphic design in school, which has proven critical for my work as a muralist.

I painted my first mural in 2009 during a study abroad trip to Costa Rica, and that is when I fell in love with mural painting.

After college, I started doing murals professionally by working for local restaurants. I have also dabbled in sign painting, chalk art, and graphic design, and painting smaller works on paper and canvas, which have all enhanced my skillset and contributed to my mural practice.

My style has evolved organically over the years with a push-pull between trying new things vs coming back to what I enjoy and what I am best at. I love painting flowers and pretty much anything nature-inspired. I’m always torn between realism and a more flat, vector-based style of design, so I usually end up combining the two because I love the contrast.

I have painted a lot of custom commercial and residential murals over the years, but recently I have shifted to doing more community projects, public art murals, and murals for schools, which I love. I’d like to get more into public art because there is a lot more creative freedom and visibility, and I love working with communities and bringing art to people who may not normally have access to it or know much about it. And I would love to go BIGGER!

So that’s me – if you’ve made it this far, thanks for reading!! And thanks for following along my art journey with me!!! I’m excited to see where it takes us next!! 🤗🎨💞

Still shots of my recent mural at Logan Farm Park in Acworth, GA. 💚💛🩵💙

This was truly a dream job! I was given complete creative freedom to install a mural in a public park near my home that I visit with my daughter all the time. It was the City of Acworth’s first RFQ under their new public art master plan, and the fact that I got to paint it for my own community made this one extra extra special.

The stairs were a little intimidating, but it was actually way easier than I expected. The hardest part was dealing with the summer heat. I had to build myself a blanket fort over the stairs using sheets and a broom stick, and I could only make it to about 2pm every day before I started to feel all woozy.

The ribbon cutting ceremony last week was a dream, and I was SO honored to receive a key to the city from the Mayor. This project is definitely high on my list of favorites, and I hope the community gets to enjoy it for a long time to come. 🤗🌼💚

Finished! My new mural at Logan Farm Park in Acworth, GA. 💚🌼🩵💙🤍💛

This was one of the most technically difficult murals I’ve ever painted, and the crazy weather made it even more challenging, but it all came together in the end and I’m super happy with how it turned out!

The design highlights the natural beauty of the area by featuring several wildflowers I’ve found growing along the ground during my walks. Also featured on the stairs is a white rose for my daughter Claire, who took the photo I used. We live here in Acworth and visit this park often so I wanted to include something in honor of her and all the fun we have living here together.

It has been such an honor to paint this for my community and the city I love so much!! 🤗💚🌼

Thanks to @cityofacworthga, Taylor Aubrey and Jeff Chase, the Acworth Arts Committee, and @acworthparksandrec for their help in making this vision a reality!!

Ribbon cutting tomorrow 7/29 at 4pm ✨

Acworth mural update! I think I must have jinxed it by talking about the weather because a crazy storm came out of nowhere a couple hours after I filmed this and completely destroyed one of our tents. 😣💔

But thankfully the mural survived with only a few small scratches! And I was able to mostly finish the top sidewalk area despite the setback.

Stairs are up next! I’ll post another update next week. Hoping for some dry (but cloudy) weather! Pray for me 😆🙏🏻🤞🏻⛅️
