The camera is just a black box with some glass in front - it’s the eye and heart that really see.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Lee Tamahori Film Director -1950-2025
I photographed Lee at Herne Bay beach in the 2000’s I think, for a long gone magazine.
This image is a clip test of one of the transparency rolls for an exposure test hence the cut off bottom from the 6x6 frame…it’s the only one I could find as the defunct mag threw everything out into a skip when they folded or were taken over by Death Star Bauer..
I remember being slightly nervous going to photograph him as a few years earlier I had incurred his wrath on the set of a tvc for beer or something he was directing…The legendary camera op/ focus puller Turts ( RIP)set me up by saying “ Al , just slip in here in front of the camera & shoot the rehearsal ,no worries, Lee won’t mind…being a tad green at film etiquette I did as instructed .. blazing away , full motor wind on a rattly Nikon..
“WHAT THE FUCK, WHO THE FUCK IS THAT?”
came the roar from the directors chair.. as I received a fairly extensive explanation of how unacceptable my actions were , I saw Mr Turts holding himself with laughter behind the camera ( & the rest of the crew).. bastards!
So when I met to do the portraits of him at Herne Bay, I was hoping he didn’t remember me , he didn’t appear to, however I couldn’t help myself & regaled this story to him which he thought was hilarious & agreed that we were both set up… we spent quite a lovely couple of hours at that beach in beautiful afternoon light.
Sometimes one ( clipped) image is enough to remember a good memory ..

Ultra Violet madness with Manuka Health Honey.
Shot on Pohuenui Island in the Marlborough Sounds. Thanks to Queen bees Rob, Ching & Jamie for inviting me into the hive. Pollination of the images by the skilled & patient Mr C Baker of The Bakery retouching.
It’s how a bee sees & none of these precious wee creatures were harmed in the making of this opus..
