A beautiful Fall weekend on the Petawawa with wonderful River Ladies of the Madawaska Valley. Turns out, 11.7cms is too low for recommendation, but it goes! What an amazing canoe tripping river in our backyard. Lac Travers- Lac McManus, October 2-4, 2026. Thanks Team!! 🧡🍁🧙‍♀️🔥 taken in Sand Lake Gate, Algonquin Park by @aliwindy.steer

Today, on what would have been my daughter Kamila’s 25th birthday, registration opens for Embracing Grief: A Weekend Nature Retreat, May 6–9, 2027 at Northern Edge Algonquin.

My life has been forever changed by loving her, losing her, and learning how to carry that loss.

This retreat grew from that journey.

I’m honoured to create this retreat with deeply empathetic and open-hearted facilitators @wendy.martin.art @aliwindy.steer and @vic.ecker

Together, we’ll make space for reflection, writing, ritual, creativity, movement, time on the land, shared meals, fire circles, and the quiet companionship of people who know what it means to grieve someone they love.

Registration is now open, with spaces intentionally limited to keep this a small and intimate gathering.

If this retreat is calling to you, I’d love to welcome you.

Meet one of the co-facilitators of the Grief Retreat 💛

Ali Windy Steer brings a gentle, grounded presence to the retreat, helping people slow down, reconnect, and move through grief with compassion.

With a background as a teacher, outdoor educator, yoga instructor, musician, and wilderness guide, she creates spaces that feel safe, inclusive, and deeply respectful, especially for those navigating loss and life transitions.

Her work is about meeting people where they’re at and helping them feel supported as they find their way forward.

If you or someone you love could benefit from a space like this, we’ll be gathering May 21–24, 2026 in Algonquin Park 🌿

To my favourite place in the world, my home;

You are not gone, simply changed and although I don’t recognize you now through grief stricken eyes, under fallen trees and rubble, I will continue to come home to you, to get to know you again, and to remember.

My heart and thoughts are with those who endured and were impacted by the natural disaster that took place in Samuel de Champlain Provincial Park in the traditional territory of the Anishinaabe Algonquin Nation on June 21st, National Indigenous People’s Day and the summer solstice of 2025. The intensity of such a lived experience, that only those who were present for can understand, will leave a lasting impact on the people, forest and land for decades to come.

Miigwitch to mother nature and her power for sparing the people and thank you to all of the courageous and competent first responders, volunteers and medical professionals who aided in the park evacuation and in the ongoing care of these people who endured and were injured in the storm. May you be held by loved ones and heal with as much ease as possible. It is nothing short of a miracle that no human life was taken by this storm; however, grief remains present in the hearts of many.

* Please fo to https://www.canadianecology.ca to DONATE to help save the Canadian Ecology Centre. Further relief work to come.

Thistles and prairie smoke

Even collectors say that memories are our most treasured possessions

With a head tilt and extended hand, she’d jive until the band stopped playing. It is a love that stretches beyond eternity

Little stitches, each little delight of a life long canvas

A special lady to me, to many. Adventurous, progressive, inspiring, determined, talented, and so appreciative of beauty
