A beautiful Fall weekend on the Petawawa with wonderful River Ladies of the Madawaska Valley. Turns out, 11.7cms is too low for recommendation, but it goes! What an amazing canoe tripping river in our backyard. Lac Travers- Lac McManus, October 2-4, 2026. Thanks Team!! 🧡🍁🧙‍♀️🔥

Today, on what would have been my daughter Kamila’s 25th birthday, registration opens for Embracing Grief: A Weekend Nature Retreat, May 6–9, 2027 at Northern Edge Algonquin.

My life has been forever changed by loving her, losing her, and learning how to carry that loss.

This retreat grew from that journey.

I’m honoured to create this retreat with deeply empathetic and open-hearted facilitators @wendy.martin.art @aliwindy.steer and @vic.ecker

Together, we’ll make space for reflection, writing, ritual, creativity, movement, time on the land, shared meals, fire circles, and the quiet companionship of people who know what it means to grieve someone they love.

Registration is now open, with spaces intentionally limited to keep this a small and intimate gathering.

If this retreat is calling to you, I’d love to welcome you.

On the west side of Friday Lake, in the Temagami area, there's a dominant hardwood ridge which was alive with early fall colour.

Stillness caused the reflection.

I was paddling centre lake with the wide angle to capture the mid morning array of cirrus clouds and the shoreline which gives the landscape some depth lines of view.

I had to wait for the sun to make its presence known.

All of a sudden it came together.

I wolf howled with glee with the composition. Long gone from our Friday night campsite, the Nipissing University BPHE hikers, with Ali, were making their way up on to Cliff Lake vista on the Ottawa-Temiskaming Highlands Trail.

I was left alone with a natural wonderment of this sense of place and time.

Priceless.

Eight days since the storm anniversary.

Happy Canada Day.

There was another intense wind and heavy rain event last evening about 7:30 pm.

Power outage... generators still on this am.

Trees down...cabin damage again. The road was blocked by a tree, now removed.

Summer school students here...all is well. Breakfast soon. Parents sent message. NNDSB admin informed.

The foreboding sky tells it all.

Muscle memory remains.

O Canada...

NEW YEAR. Two days now, one year after the storm.

On day one, we went down the Mattawa River to see its majesty, mostly untouched by the storm until you get close to the park.

Yesterday, in a way, was tying a bow with some aerial finality.

Seeing the derecho impact of 190 kph winds. It is indeed a different perspective.
A couple of short videos and s few pics.

Flying with Larry Dyke, a CEC patron and his partner Gillian; they flew cross-country from North Vancouver to be here.

With Ali Windy we conversed about the storm.

I have never denied the event of June 21, 2025 at 9:12 PM.

We wondered aloud what if the swath would have been a half km to the right (east) or a little to the left (west). But alas.

NEW YEAR. The first full day, one year after the storm.

To celebrate the NEW YEAR, one year post-storm, Ali and I went down the Mattawa River, most of the river remains untouched by the storm event.

Parresseux Falls.

Never disappoints.

Three different views of this interesting cataract. It has a straight drop, a bit of a fan and on the right a good sized turn. I like that you can paddle right up and feel the spray, especially on a hot day.

We had a hot dog lunch, and a swim and a whole pile of laughs. A wondrous day.

Naturally.

A NEW YEAR. The first day plus one year after the storm.

The commemoration was officially at 9:12 pm at the labyrinth last evening. During the day we made our way up to Red Pine trail vista... the trail is closed but there's a new way. The trees are gone what a view of the Mattawa River.

I was not sure what to post about the storm day of "infamy," because it was one of those significant "life" days.

There's been enough crying...the year has transpired. The responsibility of recording was a natural task.

So I thought I should post the very first photo I took - post storm and a few others.

The first photo taken outside was of the very damaged Honda Pilot. Its gone now.

Then the first round of photos in and around the CEC and the immediate area - as far as we could go the next day. All the trees were down.

It was not until the afternoon that they rescued us and we could start to make sense of it all.

And some photos of memories during the year, that ended up in posts.

Onward.

Last weekend, my calling to facilitate a griet retreat was realized. We arrived as strangers and built a beautiful village over the weekend. We created bonds with each other that will last well beyond the retreat. My heart is overflowing.

If you are interested in attending a grief retreat, we will be back next year May 6-9, 2027.

333 days since the storm on June 21, 2025 - 32 days and counting from today.

PART TWO - Turtle Mania.

So apart from being dozy upon approach this day, our turtles (mostly painted and snappers—there are Blanding's within the Park, which is why there is turtle fencing and signage.

Turtles are diurnal (active during the day and sleeping at night).

Once the sun comes up, they will generally become active and immediately seek out a basking spot to raise their body temperature. They will begin swimming to the surface, looking for rocks or logs to bask in the sun and warm their blood before hunting for food.

332 days since the storm on June 21, 2025 - 33 days and counting from today.

PART ONE - Turtle mania

Turtles typically wake up from their winter hibernation - called brumation - when their metabolism kicks in as the ambient temperature and daylight hours increase. It is the time to emerge from the depths.

If you are lucky on that first day you will notice two things. First, there's mud on their carapace. Two, they are almost dozy and not exhibiting their usual skittish behaviour upon approach.

And they were. Paddled right up to them as they basked in the sun.

This was one of those long weekend days spent in the canoe. Such photos/videos and fun!
