They were chosen as young as six. Taken from their families, dressed in white, and given one job for thirty years: keep the sacred fire of Rome burning.

The Vestal Virgins were some of the most powerful women in the ancient world. They also used salt, which they ground by hand into a sacred flour called mola salsa for nearly every offering in the city.

In my article, I follow that salt from the temple of Vesta to my own front door, and to a little wafer you might recognize from Sunday mass. 🕯️

Have you tasted the magic of salt? I salt every threshold of my home once a month, and recently I discovered records indicate that in Ancient Rome the Vestal Virgins would use salt in ritual to purify and sanctify. This simple tool, pulled and distilled from sea and stone, connects us through time.

The leaves have begun to turn, my tea has switched from iced to hot, and I’m 4 days away from finishing my second draft of my book, Darken Witch!

This month’s letter is like a cabinet of curiosities—a collection of little and big mementos to mark the passing of time. We get the briefest and moodiest first peek inside the Library of the Dark Moon (Ophelia’s favorite hiding spot in Edinburgh). My garden overflowing with tomatoes, beans, and one very ambitious sweet potato. The books, shows, and podcasts that cast a spell on me lately. And a few honest words about growing bigger than the parts of me that want to stay small.

Some scenes just drop into my head like a beautiful gift, a vision, a mirage made real through my fingers on a keyboard.

Most of writing isn’t quite this dreamy and magical. It’s more like a methodical hike up a hill. You can’t climb a mountain if you don’t show up.

But sometimes, a scene comes prepackaged and is placed on the doorstep of my consciousness.

So when the Scottish Lowland Coven gathered in a bewitched crypt on Samhain Eve (Halloween), I found myself sitting amongst them. I was a witch, whispering shoulder to shoulder with coven sisters, cloaked in velvet. I watched Ophelia, my main character, duck into the damp underground room. And I saw who would trail behind her—a man with spell-cast chains about his wrists.

The ritual I had planned to write became a death trial. And Ophelia’s life changed forever.
