If I could give my 22-year-old self one piece of advice, it would be: be a little more selfish but not in a bad way. 😂

I got married and had kids relatively young and while my kids have absolutely been one of my biggest motivators, I sometimes wish I had waited.

I wish I had spent more of my twenties chasing my career, taking bigger risks, traveling, saying yes to opportunities and figuring out who I was before I became responsible for tiny humans. Not because I regret my kids. I don’t. Not for a second, but I do think there’s value in having a season where you can be selfish with your time and your ambition.

My timeline just looked different and as my friend @mrs_salexp always says “two truths can exist at the same time.”

I became a wife, a mom and a Marketing Director. Eventually, I realized the career path I was on wasn’t giving me the life I wanted. So I quit and built something of my own. Having kids was part of what pushed me to do it. I wanted more ownership over my time and a career that could fit into my life.

So here’s some big sister advice: you don’t have to follow my timeline.

If you’re in your twenties and you have the freedom to chase your career, take the risk, travel or figure yourself out, do it.

And if your timeline looks similar to mine, that’s okay too.

There isn’t one right order for marriage, kids, career or success.

Come with me to see the @clevelandbrowns face the Steelers
l’ve lived in Columbus Ohio my whole life and never been to Cleveland 😮 so what better reason to take a trip than for Thursday Night Football? | put on my custom @nfl jersey and then we hit Dawg Pound Drive for some drinks from @titosvodka a tasty hot honey, chicken sandwich from @clechickenfoodtruck and fun from @njminsurance and @meijerstores before getting up close and personal with @huntingtonbankfield , stuffing our faces at the Kardiac Club, drinking all of the @drinksurfside Lemonade and Vodka our hearts desired and then watch the Browns win at home from some of the best seats in the house. If you have not ever gone to a game, I highly recommend it.
The energy is palpable and it is an experience that is difficult to describe unless you have done it.

Is course creation the new MLM? 👀

The internet has created this very interesting cycle where someone figures out how to make money online, turns that process into a course, then sells the course to people who want to learn how to make money online.

THEN those people are told they should create a course teaching their audience how to make money online.

At some point, you have to ask are we actually building businesses, or are we just teaching people how to sell the idea of building a business?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with creating a course when you have real expertise, experience and something genuinely valuable to teach but the “quit your 9-5, create a course, make passive income and live your dream life” pipeline deserves a little more scrutiny.

You cannot do everything WELL. Entrepreneurship will teach you that lesson FAST.

There’s a lot of romanticizing entrepreneurship online. Work five hours a week. Make six figures a month. Build a business while traveling the world. Have unlimited freedom.

While there are absolutely incredible perks to being your own boss, there are also tradeoffs nobody puts in the carousel.

Building a business takes time and focus. It takes making hard decisions about what you aren’t going to do, and almost always, it takes working a lot more than five hours a week.

In this clip from the first episode of The Aware Social Podcast, Marylia and I talk about the reality of entrepreneurship and motherhood, the pressure to do it all, and why you have to get really honest about what you’re actually willing to sacrifice to build the business you want AND be the mom you want to be.
