In 2017, five friends, all photographers, took a trip to Morocco. In Casablanca, someone asked what each of them shoots. When it came to Altamash Javed, the answer he got has stuck with him ever since: “Al is different. He shoots like an artist.”

Nearly a decade later, no one can put him in a box. And he’ll tell you plainly what that has cost him. In an industry that hires specialists, he never became one. Clients can’t land on his page and file him under interiors or portraits or weddings. So the work that finds him is rarer and stranger. He calls them “interesting projects”. A Boeing 777X over the Dubai Airshow. A tree.

You’ve seen the tree. The Flame Tree campaign ran all over Dubai, and every official image came from a photographer who had been shooting it purely out of love, until someone from the government spotted the work on Instagram stories, of all places.

His essay is the first in a new series of guest articles on RICE, written in his words: on refusing a niche, a decade of shooting on instinct, and what he would honestly tell every artist photographer about turning it into a career.

The full essay is on ricemiddleeast.com. Link in bio.

Flame Tree Season @flametreeseason through the eyes of Altamash Javed (@aljvd)

For a few weeks each summer, Dubai turns red. The Royal Poinciana, known locally as the flame tree, comes into full bloom along the city's roads and roundabouts, and every year it pulls photographers out into the heat to chase it.

Altamash Javed, a Fujifilm Creator based in Dubai, was commissioned to document it across the city. He came to photography the long way, leaving a seven-year career in investment banking in 2015 to step into Dubai's creative scene, starting with a phone and a community of artists. Today he runs a media production company and keeps his work deliberately uncategorised.

The project began the way a lot of his does. "I always notice this tree in the summer. One fine morning I just shot a tree with my phone, posted it on my stories, and before I knew it I was commissioned to shoot this tree all over Dubai."

What followed was two days of driving and looking. "A lot of driving and a whole lot of observation skills are required for this. If there was a shot I needed on the highway, park up at the gas station and walk it in the heat." The brief he set himself was specific. "I knew I wanted to get frames with recognizable Dubai architecture or road artwork that makes it instantly Dubai, which I think I achieved."

📷 Fujifilm X-H2 + XF35mmF2 R WR and XF70-300mmF4-5.6 R LM OIS WR

Around 90 percent of the series was shot on the 70-300mm. "My go-to, and just how my eye likes to see."
