One of our most common questions is: how much yarn do I need to make my rug? 🧶

We’ve put together a quick, practical guide to help you calculate how many cones (or grams) of yarn you’ll need for your next tufted rug.

This guide is based on:
• The AK-V tufting machine
• Default pile height of ~0.55 in / 14 mm
• A DK-weight acrylic rug yarn
• 9 WPI, 530/3 tex, approx. 3/32 in / 2.3 mm thick
• 250 g / 0.55 lb cones (each cone ≈ 250 g)
Your tufting density & fiber type can impact usage.

Swipe through to see:
→ how much yarn cut vs loop pile uses
→ how many cones you’ll need for common rug sizes
→ a simple formula you can use to calculate yarn for any size rug

As always, these are estimates — density, technique, and yarn choice can vary — so we recommend rounding up slightly 💜

Please remember the dye lots van vary for all yarns so buy enough to complete your project!

Save this for later, and happy tufting ✨

AK-V tufting gun set to loop pile 👀

This is a quick demo showing how the AK-V can be adjusted to create loop pile instead of cut pile. There’s no dedicated loop-pile tip for this machine, so technically this is a workaround… but don’t you think the loops come out so incredibly beautiful, clean, and consistent? I’m honestly in love with how this looks.

It gives me major punch-needle vibes.

⚠️ Important:
Before adjusting the scissor position, always take measurements and photos of your original settings so you can return the machine to factory cut-pile configuration if needed. Do this every time.

Full step-by-step YouTube tutorial coming next week.

A little throwback to one of my tufting workshops in 2021 — using our 450W rug shears to even out the surface of a rug. ✂️🧶

These shears are still incredibly useful for medium-sized rugs when you want to quickly level and even out the surface after tufting.

The current 2026 version now also comes with a carving/shearing guide that attaches to the machine, so you don’t have to completely eyeball how much you’re taking off. It also helps prevent accidentally tilting the machine and gouging into your rug.

I’ll tag the product from our U.S. shop in this reel, but the shears are available from all three EFFY shops:

And now for a little bit of EFFY history, if you feel like reading on. 🐑

This particular rug was made from the most beautiful, thick 100% Merino wool. It was unbelievably soft, and looking back at this footage brings back a part of EFFY’s history that I think a lot of you probably don’t know.

When I first started EFFY, all of our rug wool was sourced here in New Zealand. In the very early days, I was personally hand-dyeing it in 2 kg batches. As we grew, the dyeing was done in batches by either myself or our employee.

We also had a beautiful 100% Romney 837/3 Tex wool. The wool was grown locally, spun here in New Zealand, and then hand-dyed in batches by us.

But once EFFY grew and I started selling rug wool in much larger quantities, I eventually had to move the spinning and dyeing overseas.

And I found that genuinely a little heartbreaking.

New Zealand has nearly 23 million sheep and only around 5.3 million people — so yes, we have more than four sheep for every person living here. 🐑🐑🐑🐑👤

We’re a country known around the world for wool, yet as a small business it became increasingly difficult to have wool spun, dyed and commercially produced here at the volumes and price points we needed.

And today, we’ve actually had to discontinue our rug wool entirely because the price per cone had reached a point that simply wasn’t affordable for much of ou taken in South New Brighton beach by @all_things_effy

Turning workshop leftovers into tiny little pixels 🧶✨

I’ve been working on this Tunisian entrelac blanket using small amounts of EFFY Cotton Blend Yarn left over from teaching workshops. They’re not really enough for another full rug, but they’re absolutely perfect for these little squares — and I love that I can use up all the random colours instead of letting them sit around.

It almost looks like a little pixelated rug 💜

Each square is 4 stitches × 4 stitches, worked in Tunisian simple stitch, using a 6 mm / J Clover Amour crochet hook.

I’d never made Tunisian entrelac before, so I followed this tutorial by Maria’s Blue Crayon to get started:

Such a satisfying little scrap-yarn project — and a very good excuse to keep adding more colours. 😍

LET’S TALK PILE HEIGHT 🧶

Pile height is the height of the yarn above your tufting cloth. Trimming and carving can reduce the finished height.

How do you achieve different pile heights? Here are two ways to build your setup.

THREE ELECTRONIC GUNS

• AK-V: 14 mm (0.55 in)
• Mid Pile Duo: 25 mm (0.98 in)
• High Pile Duo: 35 mm (1.38 in)

These are their supplied heights. Switch between guns—no compressor required. You can start with one and add the others later.

Pile-height adjustment is mechanically possible, but due to the complexity of these alterations, changing the supplied pile height voids your EFFY machine warranty.

For loop-pile setup, see our YouTube and Instagram guides.

REGULAR PRICES
AK-V / Mid Pile Duo / High Pile Duo

🇺🇸 USD: $305 / $370 / $380
Three-gun total: US$1,055

🇨🇦 CAD: $445 / $485 / $520
Three-gun total: CA$1,450

🇦🇺 AUD: $480 / $490 / $562
Three-gun total: AU$1,532

🇳🇿 NZD: $580 / $570 / $630
Three-gun total: NZ$1,780

ONE AK-III + AN AIR SETUP

The AK-III offers cut AND loop pile across the full 18–60 mm (0.71–2.36 in) range by manually swapping tips and setting up the machine accordingly. The first slide shows its maximum height.

It uses electricity and compressed air. The full setup includes the gun, a suitable large compressor, filter/lubricator, air-tool oil, hose and fittings.

Allow for the equipment, extra workspace and a bigger upfront budget. The compressor also makes this setup noisier, so consider whether your workspace suits the extra noise.

AK-III SETUP EXAMPLE (USD)

• AK-III: $980
• Compressor: ≈$610
• Filter/lubricator: ≈$41
• Air-tool oil: ≈$17
• Air hose: ≈$17
• Fittings: ≈$35

ESTIMATED COMPLETE SETUP

≈ US$1,700
≈ CA$2,360
≈ AU$2,370
≈ NZ$2,920

Running All Things EFFY in Aug 2022!

Back then I didnt have any regional shops. It was just me, a garage, a lot of stock, workshops, and markets!

Aug 2026: EFFY has 3 regional shops in the USA, Canada ans Australia. Now much of my time is behind a computer making sure you are all happy with your orders, ensuring restocks are happening quickly enough, that shipping is running smoothly, and of course ☠️ taxes & sales tax across 4 countries is being submitted. Knowing how 4 countries work makes my head spin at times.

I love the wild ride both my persistence and your continued support has allowed me. I will continue to show for the tufting community with quality diverse supplies as long as humanly possible 💜
